Silva opens as slight favorite in rematch with Weidman

MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas has opened Anderson Silva as a -140 betting favorite with the comeback on new UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman at +100 for their rematch, which is rumored to take place Feb. 1, 2014 on Super Bowl Weekend in New Jersey.

"The first time around I opened Anderson Silva -215. This time around the line is significantly lower but Anderson is still coming in as a slight betting favorite," says Kalikas. "I have a feeling a lot of the general betting public will support Silva because they feel Weidman’s win was a fluke. But I think you can make the argument for Weidman actually coming in as a slight favorite, as stylistically he still matches up very well with Silva and now he has the confidence backing it up coming off that KO win."

"As far as early line movement, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the initial action cause the line to climb a little bit on Anderson, but I have a feeling by fight day the fight should come back near my opener on fight day," he adds.

This is going to be one of the most interesting fights of 2014 and can go either way. Although there’s no doubt that Weidman was the better man at UFC 162, Silva did not fight to his true potential and if he actually takes Weidman seriously in the rematch, he can definitely win the fight by knockout.

At the same time, it seems like Silva is lacking in motivation these days and with no one know exactly where his head is at right now, especially after being brutally knocked out for the first time in his career. He’s definitely a risky bet.

It will be interesting to see which way the public takes the line but my initial instinct is this line stays close to where it opened, because ultimately I do believe it’s a pick ‘em fight with a slight edge to Silva and I think most bettors will agree with that sentiment.

Silva is rounding out a stellar career at almost 40.....the big picture is to lose and make enough to retire with that last mega payday.......AND RECLAIM HIS TITLE!!!!

Whoever believes the fight was fixed is just plain ridiculous. Foolish people. Silva got caught up in his tactics and someone finally made it him for it. Simple as that. I favor Weidman in the rematch.
