Giants, Mets trend 'over' following extra-inning games

The New York Mets prevailed over the San Francisco Giants by a score of 4-3 in a marathon, 16-inning ball game Monday night.

The bullpens saw a lot of action as each pen accumulated nine innings of work in the game. The clubs resume business this evening, so we decided to have a look at the scheduled starting pitchers and how each ball club performs in the game following an extra-inning affair.

Not including last night's game, the Mets have played in 10 extra-inning ball games this season. They have posted a record of 2-8 SU (straight up) and the O/U (over/under) is 7-3 following those games. The Giants have played in 12 extra inning games thus far and have a record of 3-9 SU following those games. Their O/U record is 7-4-1.

Both of Tuesday's starters, Dillon Gee for the Mets and Barry Zito for the Giants, have started one ball game that has come the game after and extra-inning game.

Gee was charged with the loss against the Atlanta Braves after he gave up five earned runs in five innings in a 6-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves on May 25. The Mets' righty has seven quality starts on the year and has lasted six or more innings in eight of his 17 starts this year.

Zito fared worse in his lone start following an extra-inning game as he gave up nine earned runs in just 2 2-3 innings en route to a 10-8 loss against the Milwaukee Brewers back on April 16. The Giants lefty has six quality starts in 17 games this year. Zito has also gone six or more innings in eight of his starts.

The Giants are currently -133 for this evening's ball game and the total is 7.5.
