Patriots' odds drop following arrest, release of TE Hernandez

Sportsbooks are reacting to the arrest of tight end Aaron Hernandez and his release from the New England Patriots Wednesday, trimming the Patriots’ Week 1 and Super Bowl odds.

Hernandez, who caught 51 passes for 483 yards and five touchdowns last season, was arrested for his involvement in the murder of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, whose body was found about one mile from Hernandez’s home on June 17.

According to online sportsbook CarbonSports.ag, New England’s decision to drop Hernandez has trimmed the Pats from 7.5-point favorites to -7 versus the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 of the NFL schedule and has also dropped them from +700 to +800 to win Super Bowl XLVIII.

Hernandez’s absence isn’t the overall cause of these adjustments. Fellow tight end Rob Gronkowski recently underwent surgeries on his arm and back, and has had a bevy of health issues in the past year. His status for the season opener on September 8 is still up in the air.

The Patriots are also without hybrid player Danny Woodhead, who split time as a running back and tight end, after he signed with the San Diego Chargers this offseason. New England signed WR Danny Amendola to replace WR Brandon Lloyd, who was released in March, and WR Wes Welker, who signed with the Denver Broncos.

New England currently has a win total of 11 games (over/under -115) at CarbonSports.ag.

Oddsmakers in Las Vegas have also adjusted several New England odds.

Week 1 line: Patriots -7 at Bills (down from -7.5)
Week 2 line: Patriots -10 vs Jets (down from -12)
Regular season wins: Patriots 11.5 under -170 (down from under -155)
AFC East division: Patriots 2/9 (was 1/6)
AFC Conference odds: Patriots 12/5 (was 2/1)
Super Bowl odds:
Patriots 6/1 (was 5/1)

I took under at 11.5 earlier in yr and feeling good right now. With Hernandez out, Welker & Lloyd gone, and Gronk messed up, thats practically their whole receiving corp. Who is Brady gonna throw to? Amendola? He won't make it 6 wks without getting hurt. WR Tebow?

I'll take the UNDER 11 at -115 The Pats were overrated to begin with, this isn't going to help
