Heat's backdoor cover gives Miami bettors more to cheer for

The Miami Heat gave their fans a second straight NBA Championship and burned San Antonio Spurs bettors with a backdoor cover in the final seconds of Game 7 of the NBA Finals Thursday night.

With the Heat opening as high as 7-point favorites and action on San Antonio dropping the spread to Miami -5.5, Spurs backers felt pretty good about their wagers for most of Game 7.

“Last night's result was fortunate for the book, as we had a majority of support for the Spurs +6 and +5.5. The under always helps too,” Jeff Sherman, assistant manager at the LVH Superbook in Las Vegas told Covers. "Amazingly, the only time the Heat were covering was at the end."

“We came out a small winner on the series, as the Spurs saw slightly more support at our place from beginning to end,” he adds.

With two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Kawhi Leonard’s 3-pointer trimmed the Heat’s lead to 90-88. San Antonio had two chances to tie the score on a Leonard missed jumper and a Tim Duncan hook shot that rimmed out.

LeBron James, who won his second straight Finals MVP, put the Heat up by four with a 19-foot jumper and pushed the difference to six points after a steal and two free throws. Dwyane Wade would add one more from the stripe to make the score 95-88, securing the win for many bettors who took Miami at -6.5 and shorter.

Under bettors were rewarded with a low-scoring Game 7, with the final score staying below the 187.5 number.

The finals finished with a 4-3 over/under count. Miami finished 3-4 ATS against San Antonio and 12-11 ATS for the postseason.
