1* Pittsburgh (7:10 ET): On one hand, we have the slumping Atlanta Braves. On the other, we have the Pittsburgh Pirates trying to secure one of the two Wild Cards in the National League and also with an outside shot of capturing the NL Central. Despite playing three straight 1-0 games (going 2-1) and not being the strongest road team, I'll back the team w/ something to play for.
Pittsburgh has won 10 of 12 and 15 of 18. They are receiving tremendous pitching right now, both from the starters and the 'pen. The former group has delivered 23 consecutive shutout innings while the latter has posted a 1.15 ERA the L17 games. Starting today and looking to continue the trend will be Gerrit Cole, who has won his L3 starts, all of them quality outings. Going back to last year's rookie season, Cole has been great in the month of September with a 7-1 record and 2.98 ERA.
The fact that the Braves have scored three runs or fewer in 10 consecutive games does not bode well for them or starter Alex Wood. This has been one of the worst offenses in all of baseball all year long; they currently rank 29th in runs scored after averaging a paltry 1.5 per game those L10. When the Pirates wake up tomorrow, they could officially be in the playoffs (if they win here + Milwaukee loses in Cincinnati). I'll call for them to take care of their end of the bargain. 1* Pittsburgh.
