NASCAR betting: Auto Club 400 preview

The Sprint Cup Series moves back west to Fontana, California for the Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway Sunday.

Tony Stewart won the rain-shortened event at the two-mile oval last year. The Fontana racetrack has always been known for great speed but it’s much harder to pass at the Auto Club Speedway than at a short track like Bristol.

Favorite: Jimmie Johnson (+500)

Johnson, who hails from nearby El Cajon, Calif., holds the track record for most wins with five. He also leads all drivers with the most top-5 finishes (12) and most top-10s (14) at this track. Johnson is also the only driver to win from the pole at Auto Club Speedway, accomplishing the feat on Aug. 31, 2008.

Live dog: Tony Stewart (+1,100)

Stewart is the defending champion and has won two of the last three Cup races at the two-mile track. The 41-year-old sits well back in the Sprint Cup Standings (24th) and desperately needs a good showing to get back in the mix.

Long shot: Ryan Newman (+5,900)

Newman has finished seventh or better in his last three starts in Fontana. When he’s made it to the finish he’s placed in the top 10 this season, but that’s happened only twice. He earned a pole in his very first Sprint Cup start at the two-mile oval.

Key stat: Hendrick Motorsports has nine wins to its credit at the event, the most of all teams (Roush Fenway Racing is second with seven).

Notable quotable:

"It’s a really fun racetrack. It’s widened out and it’s become where you can race all over it and, with the race being as long as it is, you need to take a lot of time working through traffic and being able to have a good car and all that. It’s the same thing every week. California is just another one of those racetracks that seems to suit Jimmie (Johnson) really, really well. He’s been in contention to win the past eight races there, I think, and he’s probably won four of them. You have to hit it at the right time in these races as far as your adjustments go. Everywhere you go, but at California, too, it’s all about the second-to-last pit stop and the last pit stop and making the right adjustment to carry you to the end of the race.” Kyle Busch on Fontana and racing in California.
