Around the rink: Thursday’s NHL betting news and notes

Take a look at our quick-hitting betting notes for all six games on the NHL schedule Thursday.

New York Islanders at New York Rangers (-177, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Evgeni Nabokov (NYI), Martin Biron (NYR)

Mired in a five-game losing skid, the New York Islanders travel downtown to visit the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, where they haven’t won since Dec. 26, 2009. The Rangers have outscored the Islanders 35-11 en route to eight straight wins at home, including a 4-1 victory last Thursday. The Islanders have allowed 20 goals during their five-game losing streak. The under is 5-0 in the Rangers’ last five games versus Atlantic foes.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Carolina Hurricanes (-140, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Ben Scrivens (TOR), Dan Ellis (CAR)

Toronto has won four straight since a 4-1 loss to Carolina on Feb. 4, while the Hurricanes have won four of five while earning a point in the loss. The Maple Leafs are quite comfortable on the road, where they have won four straight and are 6-1-0 this season. But Toronto faces a stretch without No. 1 goaltender James Reimer and point-per-game scorer Matt Frattin, who both recently suffered knee injuries. While Reimer should miss only one week, Frattin is expected to be out longer. The under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.

Washington Capitals at Tampa Bay Lightning (-153, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Braden Holtby (WSH), Mathieu Garon (TB)

The Washington Capitals finally have a winning streak after sweeping a home-and-home set with Florida. Washington has picked it up on the power play the last five games, converting on seven of 14 opportunities - including two of three in the victory on Tuesday over the Cats. Tampa Bay posted a 6-3 triumph over the Capitals in the season opener at home, where it is 5-1-1 overall. An important note for in-game bettors: The Lightning have scored 22 goals in the third period, six more than any team in the NHL.

Montreal Canadiens at Florida Panthers (+106, 5)

Probable goaltenders: Carey Price (MTL), Jose Theodore (FLA)

Montreal dominated the Panthers 4-1 on Jan. 22 to halt a string of four straight losses to Florida. Only the Buffalo Sabres (48) have surrendered more goals than the Panthers (46), who have played two fewer games. Jose Theodore is expected back in net to face his former team. The veteran netminder was yanked after allowing five goals on 21 shots in a 5-0 loss at Washington last Saturday. Theodore is 2-2-1 with a bloated 4.60 goals-against average against Montreal.

Phoenix Coyotes at Nashville Predators (-127, 5)

Probable goaltenders: Mike Smith (PHX), Pekka Rinne (NSH)

The Nashville Predators have struggled to find offense after registering two goals in their last three games. The Phoenix Coyotes have also had issues finding the net. The Coyotes have averaged two goals per game over their last five - but won four of them on the strength of goaltender Mike Smith, who posted two shutouts. The Coyotes defeated Nashville 4-0 in Phoenix on Jan. 28. The under is 4-0 in the last four meetings.

Colorado Avalanche at Minnesota Wild (-165, 5)

Probable goaltenders: J.S. Giguere (COL), Niklas Backstrom (MIN)

The Avalanche will be without top defenseman Erik Johnson, who suffered a head injury in Colorado's 2-1 overtime loss to Calgary on Monday. Colorado has lost three straight and its offense has suffered without captain and reigning Calder Trophy winner Gabriel Landeskog, who has missed the last seven games with a concussion. While the Avalanche have scored just 23 goals in 11 games, the Wild have 27 in 13 contests after their 2-1 loss at Vancouver on Tuesday. Minnesota, though, is 4-1-0 against non-playoff teams from 2011-12, including a 4-2 victory over Colorado in the season opener. The under is 5-0-1 in the Wild’s last six home games.
