Mickelson to skip WGC Match Play Championship

Phil Mickelson has bowed out of the Accenture Match Play Championship later this month for the third time in the past four years.

Mickelson’s three kids are off school the week of the Accenture Match Play Championship (Feb. 20-24) and he plans on taking them on a family trip instead of playing in the event.

Lefty hasn’t enjoyed success at the tournament taking place just north of Tucson, Ariz. Mickelson has made it to the quarters just once in 11 appearances at the event, where he won his first PGA Tour title (La Costa).

Mickelson is coming off a wire-to-wire win at the Phoenix Open and is five strokes off the pace at Pebble Beach after the first round. He is the defending champion at Pebble and had +550 odds to win the event prior to the start of the tournament Thursday.
