Major team owners and their sports betting ties

In the midst of the New Jersey sports betting case, where the NCAA and the major pro sports leagues are suing the state of New Jersey to halt its intent to grant sports betting licenses, Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association chief Joe Brennan Jr. posed a poignant question on Twitter.

He asked:

It’s a timely question, considering the outlandish recent claims made by NBA commissioner David Stern that the state of New Jersey was trying to "victimize" the billion-dollar power that is the NBA. Stern suggested that legalizing gambling in New Jersey would tarnish the sport and lead to “prostitution, absenteeism, loansharking, and alcoholism.”

Yet it would appear certain owners don’t have a problem with it, if you’re the type who believes actions speak louder than words. Brennan pointed out the North American owners who also own English Premier League soccer teams, which use sportsbook partnerships as a key source of revenue.

Just this summer, Manchester United signed a deal with Bwin for exclusive sponsorship rights. It's just another example of how sports and betting can coexist cohesively - as well as another example of hypocrisy when it comes to the leagues' arguments against legalized sports betting.

Morality cannot be legislated. @elliotDgreat - The Trick: Say cure / opener "X" will cause / exacerbate problem "Y" (when Y is occurring and it's profitable) - like that Mayor Daley Freudian Slip: "The Police aren't there to create disorder, they're there to preserve disorder." The Morale of this Story is that it'll be harder to cheat, as cheating may have above-board paid watch-dogs snooping, and The Pie will be sliced up more so the Take will be lessened. Greed. Greed, and accompanying Ignorance. Two of our world's worst causes of troubles.

On the other hand, you have to consider that the NBA is an association, i.e., run by a committe. and you have freedom of religion. Freedom of Press, and human behavior. And the only thing foreign other than the owners you can name in the NBA is the Pelicans, and last I heard they lost their right to vote, so they start making up their own laws.

David Stern is either naive, delusional, or a hypocrite, possibly all three. Perhaps he would also like to rejuvenate Prohibition, history has taught us what an overwhelming success that was. I guess there will always be Puritans, Quakers and Bible thumpers that are convinced you can legislate morality.

Stern needs to step out of that "silver-spoon" box of a life he lives. It's obvious he is probably trying to protect the control mechanisms that the league already has in place. The mechanism I speak of is the odds movements. I see it everyday where the odds seem to move because somebody knows whats going to happen. Some days it seems most of the players are moving lines themselves. To say that gambling will bring all those offenses is a good way of hiding the truth. Unfortunately, those offenses have been there way before David Stern scratched his own ass for the first time in his life.

Analysis:

I've cashed the Cardinals multiple times earlier in the week as a free play winner and think Saturday happens to be a good time to jump on them again as they host the Milwaukee Brewers. They took Friday's opener, 7-6, which was their 13th win in 16 games. Milwaukee is going the other way right now, losing 13 of 15. This series appears to be a big mismatch. St. Louis is now 7-1 vs. Milwaukee this year.

Here are my keys to the game:

1. Lance Lynn - I have to start here. He's 6-1 in his eight starts with a 2.88 ERA. At home, he's 4-0 with a 2.00 ERA. Since his 1st start of the year, he's allowed more than three runs only one time. Needless to say, I don't think Brewers starter Marco Estrada will be much match for him. Estrada has an 8.22 ERA his last three starts, though he did win his last.

2. Hitting woes - The bottom four hitters in Milwaukee's lineup showed why they are hitting higher in the order Friday night, going a combined 0 for 15 Friday. Heading into yesterday, the Brewers were averaging just 3.3 runs per game on the road.

3. X-Factor - The Cardinals seem to have solved their previous bullpen woes somewhat with Edward Mujica having saved all 12 games in 12 opportunities.

Selection: The play is on the St. Louis Cardinals (1*).
