Reviewing NFL player props: Bettors set to cash in on AP

Betting on NFL player props is a nice alternative from the usual moneyline, pointspread and total wagers.

Let's take a look at the current leaders in passing yards, rushing yards, and receiving yards and reflect on what their odds were to lead those respective stat categories in the summer.

Most Passing Yards

Current leader: Drew Brees - 4,028 yards, Opened: +350

Brees led the league in passing yards a year ago and is in position to defend his title this year. But with three games left, it’s too early to declare him the winner.

In the hunt:

Matt Stafford – 4,006 yards, Opened: +550
Tom Brady – 3,833 yards, Opened: +350
Peyton Manning – 3, 812 yards, Opened: +1600

*Odds courtesy of on Aug. 13, 2012.

Most Rushing Yards

Current leader: Adrian Peterson - 1,600 yards, Opened: +1200

You’ll have the bankroll to throw a killer New Year’s Eve party if you gambled on Peterson to rebound from major knee surgery and lead the league in rushing. Just let us know where and when to arrive. We'll bring the babes, you supply the booze.

In the hunt:

Marshawn Lynch – 1,266 yards, Opened: +1800
Doug Martin – 1,234 yards, Opened: Field +350

*Odds courtesy of Cantor Gaming on Aug. 13, 2012.

Most Receiving Yards

Current leader: Calvin Johnson – 1,546 yards, Opened: +250

Detroit’s Calvin Johnson opened as a heavy betting favorite to defend his title as the receiver to compile the most receiving yards after racking up 1,681 yards last year. He’s well on his way to surpassing those totals this year and has a hearty lead over Chicago’s Brandon Marshall. If Megatron has the big game he's projected to have against the Cardinals on Sunday, consider this a done deal and get your mother-in-law something special for Christmas this year.

In the hunt:

Brandon Marshall – 1,342 yards, Opened: +1000
Reggie Wayne – 1,220 yards, Opened: Field +300

*Odds courtesy of Cantor Gaming on Aug. 17, 2012.

Again, it’s still too early to declare a winner in this category. But Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are the sexy bets at this point, with Peterson playing the role of the dark horse.

Aaron Rodgers – Opened: +500
Tom Brady – Opened: +650
Peyton Manning – Opened: +800
Calvin Johnson – Opened: +1500
Adrian Peterson – Opened: +2500

*Odds courtesy of The Greek on July 10, 2012.
