Jays-Marlins make huge trade; World Series odds drop

The Toronto Blue Jays made a blockbuster trade with the Miami Marlins early Tuesday evening that saw five players from Miami's starting lineup head north to the American League East club.

According to a report from the Chicago Tribune: "The Marlins dealt shortstop Jose Reyes and pitchers Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson to the Toronto Blue Jays. Super utility player Emilio Bonifacio and catcher John Buck also are headed to Toronto." ESPN Stats & Info Tweeted that Miami has now traded 12 of 25 players from 2012 opening day roster, including the entire starting infield.

Miami gets a pair of shortstops in return, Yunel Escobar and Adeiny Hechavarria, along with promising pitchers Henderson Alvarez and Justin Nicolino. FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal and ESPN's Buster Olney were among the first on Twitter to report the deal and Olney Tweeted around 7:30 p.m. ET that the deal may be approved later Tuesday evening.

Jeff Sherman, oddsmaker at the Las Vegas Hotel's SuperBook, told Covers they had the Blue Jays set at 40-1 to win the World Series before the trade and 20-1 to win the AL East. They moved Toronto to 15-1 to win the World Series and 15-2 to win the pennant.

Most other online books had either taken their futures off the board or didn't have MLB futures to begin with. Uwin.com had the Jays as high as 100-1 but quickly moved them down to 66-1 minutes after the trade rumors started swirling shortly after 7 p.m. ET. By 8 p.m. ET they had moved Toronto to 28-1. On Wednesday, Uwin.com had the Jays down to 22-1. Bet365.com had the Blue Jays listed at 30-1 by shortly after 7 p.m. ET Tuesday evening.

The Jays went 73-89 in 2012 and finished in fourth in the AL East, four games ahead of the last-place Red Sox. The Marlins went 69-93 and finished in last place in the NL East.

The writing was on the wall for Escobar when Aviles arrived so this is no surprise, but landing a legitimate lead off man and two quality pitchers is A-1 for Blue Jays
