Exposing the Top 25: Where the polls went wrong
Each week throughout the college football season, Covers Expert Chris Elliott will dissect the new Top 25 rankings, looking for betting value. He'll showcase the most overrated team, along with the most underrated ranked team, and an unranked squad that he feels should be in the Top 25.Most Overrated Top 25 Team: Notre Dame Fighting Irish (7-0 SU, 4-3 ATS)
The Irish have been great all season and it’s hard to deny their 7-0 record and their second-ranked defense. However, they are in tough travelling to No. 8 Oklahoma Saturday. They are coming off a hard-fought 17-14 victory against BYU (4-4) at home. They have only played once on the road, an impressive 20-3 victory at Michigan State six weeks ago.
The Sooners are an amazing 18-2 in their last 20 starts at home. If the Irish can pull off the improbable victory, then they certainly deserve their lofty ranking. I expect a tough Oklahoma victory and a small drop in the standings for the Irish. Most Underrated Top 25 Team: Clemson Tigers (6-1 SU, 5-2 ATS)
The Tigers have been dominating out of the gate with their lone blemish on the season a tight 49-37 loss at No. 11 Florida State (7-1) in Week 4. They are coming off an impressive 38-17 victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies (4-4) at home and travel to Wake Forest (4-3, 2-3 ACC) looking to extend their win streak to four games Thursday.
The last time Clemson travelled to Groves Stadium was 2010 with the Tigers coming away with the easy 30-10 victory. Expect much of the same as the Tigers pick up the decisive victory and climb a couple more spots up the standings.
Unranked team that should be ranked: Wisconsin Badgers (6-2 SU, 4-4 ATS)
I had the Badgers slotted in this position in Week 8 as well. I predicted an easy victory for the Badgers last weekend and they didn't disappoint against an outmatched Gopher's squad at home. Wisconsin is coming off three convincing victories in a row with its two losses on the season at No. 7 Oregon State 10-7 and at tough Nebraska 30-27.
Wisconsin is at home against Michigan State in Week 9. It has owned MSU in Madison with a record of 6-1 in their last seven meetings at Camp Randall Stadium. Look for the Badgers to pick up the big home victory and push their way back into the Top 25.
