Bettors will mourn Colon suspension but it won't move lines

Oakland Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon has been suspended 50 games without pay after testing positive for testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance, and is subject to a 50-game suspension.

Bettors will mourn the loss of Colon, who was one of the most profitable pitchers in baseball this season according to Covers' money rankings. Those who wagered $100 on each of his 24 outings would have turned a $678 profit this season, good for 12th best in the majors.

Colon posted a 10-9 record with a 3.43 ERA for the A's this year after going 8-10 with a 4.00 ERA with the Yankees last campaign.

The A's are having a surprising season and sit 1.5 games out of the wild card race ahead of Wednesday's game against the Twins. They currently sit at 20-1 to win the World Series at the M sportsbook in Las Vegas, operated by Cantor Gaming. Some books opened the A's as high as 75-1 before the season began.

"I doubt we'll make any moves on (the A's futures odds)," Cantor Gaming's Andrew Patterson told Covers as a rain storm poured down outside Wednesday in Las Vegas. "If they lost a true 'ace' you might see some movement."

Patterson cited the Nationals' Stephen Strasburg and the Giants' Matt Cain among a handful of starters who might move the line when big injury or suspension news breaks.

Ryan Greene of William Hill also told us they have no plans of moving the A's futures odds. They have Oakland set at 10-1 to win the pennant and 18-1 to win the World Series.

"I apologize to the fans, to my teammates and to the Oakland A's," Colon said in a statement released by the players' association. "I accept responsibility for my actions and I will serve my suspension as required by the joint drug program."

Oakland is 14-10 in Colon’s 24 starts this season. Colon was projected to start Thursday against the Rays and Jarrod Parker is the probable starter Friday in Tampa Bay and could be moved up to fill in.

The former Cy Young Award winner will miss the final 40 games of the regular season and the first 10 games of the postseason if Oakland qualifies.

That's a really interesting point, Steve. If MLB wants a real deterrent, that would certainly be one. Good post.

I think the league needs to take the games he started and won this season and make them losses and other team gets the win.
