LSU dismisses Heisman finalist Mathieu; oddsmakers have mixed reactions
LSU gave 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu the boot from its football program on Friday for violating team rules, a hit to the Tigers’ national championship aspirations just three weeks before their season opener.
The cornerback’s repeated violations of the team’s substance abuse policy is the reason for the dismissal, according to a source close to ESPN.
LSU enters the 2012 campaign as the top ranked team in the USA Today coaches’ poll and the Tigers opened camp last week as one of the favorites (+400) to reach the national championship game.
Covers has learned William Hill Las Vegas won't be altering lines due to the dismissal. However, John Avello at the Wynn Las Vegas has taken the line off the board.
The junior rose from obscurity to help the Tigers claim the SEC championship and reach the BCS title game last season. The All-American scored four touchdowns -- two on punt returns and two on fumble returns -- picked off two passes and forced six fumbles last campaign.
