NFL preseason betting: How do Week 1 home faves fare?

Football fever is beginning to spread amongst sports bettors with the Hall of Fame Game kicking off the 2012 NFL preseason schedule. Oddsmakers have an antidote: Early preseason Week 1 odds.

Books offshore and in Las Vegas are slowly releasing spreads and totals for the first slate of exhibition games, with 12 home favorites currently set for Week 1. Home teams giving the points went a profitable 11-4 ATS in Week 1 last year, but aren’t always the smartest bet.

In fact, over the past five seasons (2007-2011), home chalk has gone an even 34-34-3 against the spread in Week 1 of the NFL preseason. Home favorites are 26-17 ATS in Week 1 over the past three preseasons following a 2-10-2 ATS mark in 2008.

Road favorites, in which there is only one on the current Week 1 board (Redskins -2 at Bills), have gone 5-3 ATS in the opening week of preseason action since 2007. Last year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the lone road faves visiting the Kansas City Chiefs as 2.5-point chalk. Tampa Bay won 25-0.

There is one pick’em on the 2012 preseason Week 1 board. The Indianapolis Colts host the St. Louis Rams on Sunday, August 12. The spread opened at Indianapolis -1 but has since moved to a pick’em, with the LVH in Las Vegas dealing Colts +1.

I can see Tennessee with Locker beating almost any team in the NFL in the first game. Seattle's D is an improving unit, but in the first game, they won't be able to stop Locker. They are getting 3 pts, so that would be my #1 pick of preseason's game one. I like this analysis and information. I will be looking at all the games with this in mind. Should be very profitable.

Analysis:

Behind Jeff Samardzija, the Cubs came in and stole one in St. Louis Tuesday night, evening this series up at one game apiece. For a variety of reasons, I don't see Chicago coming in and winning two in a row here at Busch Stadium.  This is a free play on the Cardinals.

Here are my keys to the game:

1. Cardinals off a Loss - St. Louis doesn't lose back to back games very often. In fact, since a three-game losing skid in late April, it has happened just once.  For the season, the Cards are 21-4 off a loss. 

2. Home Field Advantage - The Cubs come in averaging just 3.3 runs/game away from the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field. Even with yesterday's win, they are just 33-72 as a road underdog.  They just 5-14 their last 19 at St. Louis.

3. X-Factor - Cubs starter Edwin Jackson is not having a good season.  St. Louis is 37-18 vs. righties this year. Jackson has a 3-15 TSR in division games the last two years.
