Football fever is beginning to spread amongst sports bettors with the Hall of Fame Game kicking off the 2012 NFL preseason schedule. Oddsmakers have an antidote: Early preseason Week 1 odds.Books offshore and in Las Vegas are
slowly releasing spreads and totals for the first slate of exhibition games, with 12 home favorites currently set for Week 1. Home teams giving the points went a profitable 11-4 ATS in Week 1 last year, but aren’t always the smartest bet.
In fact, over the past five seasons (2007-2011), home chalk has gone an even 34-34-3 against the spread in Week 1 of the NFL preseason. Home favorites are 26-17 ATS in Week 1 over the past three preseasons following a 2-10-2 ATS mark in 2008.
Road favorites, in which there is only one on the current Week 1 board (Redskins -2 at Bills), have gone 5-3 ATS in the opening week of preseason action since 2007. Last year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the lone road faves visiting the Kansas City Chiefs as 2.5-point chalk. Tampa Bay won 25-0.
There is one pick’em on the 2012 preseason Week 1 board. The Indianapolis Colts host the St. Louis Rams on Sunday, August 12. The spread opened at Indianapolis -1 but has since moved to a pick’em, with the LVH in Las Vegas dealing Colts +1.
