Angels add RHP Greinke, debuts vs. Rays Sunday

The Los Angeles Angels are loading up for a postseason push, acquiring former American League Cy Young winner Zack Greinke from the Milwaukee Brewers Friday night.

The addition of another proven starting pitcher boosts the Angels’ already-impressive rotation, which features Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, Dan Haren and Garrett Richards. Los Angeles’ starting staff has a collective ERA of 3.96 – fourth lowest in the AL. However, in the 24 games leading into Friday, the Halos’ starters lugged a 5.72 ERA.

With Greinke, who is 9-3 with a 3.44 ERA this year, offshore oddsmakers have the Halos set as low as +1,000 to win the World Series and +700 to win the AL Pennant. Some online markets are offering L.A.’s World Series futures as high as +1,250.

The Angels are currently 55-45, down -3.30 units, heading into Saturday’s home game against the Tampa Bay Rays. They’re four games behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West and one and half games up on the Oakland A’s in the AL Wildcard race. Los Angeles sent shortstop Jean Segura and two Double-A pitchers to the Brewers for the 2009 AL Cy Young winner.

Greinke, who is in the final year of a five-year deal, is expected to make his Los Angeles debut versus the Rays Sunday. The Angles could have waited until their four-game road set with the Rangers, starting Monday, but manager Mike Scioscia told reporters that he wanted to keep the right-hander on his regular routine.

Greinke is 2-4 with a career 3.32 ERA versus Tampa Bay

This puts the Halos one step above the Rangers. No team has a 1-4 starting rotation like the Angels. Trout will continue to improve King Albert and Trumbo's numbers. Happy Halofan here
