UEFA warns Arsenal midfielder about betting tweet

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has narrowly escaped punishment for tweet he wrote about a Champions League match last season.

Wilshere wrote that teammate Emanuel Frimpong was "worth a cheeky £10" to net the first goal of the match when Arsenal faced off against Olympiakos.

After Frimpong nearly buried an early chance, Wilshere tweeted “Frimmy nearly won me some money there!"

He later tweeted "I didn't actually bet on the game. I know we're not allowed to! I was only messing just to be clear."

UEFA says it has warned Wilshere, who missed the entire year with an injury, of its policy about betting on a player’s own team back in May.

"The player has been warned for being in breach of the principles of integrity of matches and competitions,” a UEFA spokesperson told reporters. “The disciplinary measure was a warning."

I think this is likely to happen more and more frequently unless major sports franchises act swiftly to educate their stars in the ways of current media formats and their potential pitfalls. I also think we might have to see a player making a majorly bad decision about what they post on social media networks, to the utter detriment of their career, before we see clubs acting. There's a raft of Premier League footballers that look like potential candidates for that particular ignominy. Joey Barton springs immediately to mind!
