NHL East final: Rangers-Devils preview and prediction

New York Rangers (1) vs New Jersey Devils (6)

Series price: Rangers -140, Devils +127 (odds courtesy of PinnacleSports.com)

Season series: Rangers (3-2-1), Devils (3-3-0)

In a year where goaltending has completely dominated the postseason, one of the greatest goalies of all-time is about to get his stiffest test yet.

Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils have had to outduel Jose Theodore and Ilya Bryzgalov, and now they face-off against Hart and Vezina Trophy Nominee Henrik Lundqvist.

Brodeur’s numbers, including his .920 save percentage, have been much better in the playoffs than they were in the regular season but at this stage of his career he is not capable of out playing Lundqvist. The 18 skaters in front of Brodeur will need to carry the play and that is much more difficult to do against the Rangers than the Panthers or Flyers.

Unlike the other three teams remaining, the Devils have been a breath of fresh air in these playoffs showing a willingness to open things up a little bit. Will that strategy work against the Rangers? The Senators tried to do it against the NYR but came up short in seven games.

They didn’t all play on the same line but the trio of Ilya Kovalchuk, Zach Parise and Travis Zajac were too much to handle for opposing defenses in the first two rounds. It will be tough to keep rolling against Dan Girardi, Marc Staal, Ryan McDonagh and Michael Del Zotto.

There is one area where the Devils will have an edge and it’s something they will need to take advantage of if they want to win this season. Having not played since Tuesday the Devils should be much fresher for Game 1 than the Rangers who had one day’s rest between series.

The two sides split their six regular season meetings, with both teams picking up two wins at home and one on the road. In the final meeting of the season the game opened with a line brawl and finished with both coaches blaming each other for the blood bath.

As a fan of offensive hockey I would love to see the Devils win this series, but - unless Brodeur can turn the clock back 10 years - Lundqvist and the Rangers will be heading to the Cup Final for the first time since 1994, a season in which they also eliminated the Devils in the conference final.

Series prediction:
Rangers in six

My season record is still at 144-128-6 for + 8.05 Units after taking several days of of hockey betting (no bets since the Under winner in Game 6 for the Rangers)....Tonight I played the RANGERS at -125. Yes, part of the reason I bet them is because I'm rooting for them in the Series, but I also still think they are the better overall team. But I'm sure it will be a battle and probably another 7 game Series. These 2 teams split the 6 games during the season with each team winning 3 times and the home team won 4 of those 6 games. I was going to lay off and hope I get some chances to bet the Under 5, but I'm not touching the Under 4.5 and I decided to bite on the Rangers at -125 here in Game 1...............RANGERS -125 vs New Jersey, to win 1 unit....Good Luck to all!

I agree that NYR is the better team but I see the Rangers being tired after the tough series vs Washington so NJ 3-2 or 4-2. NJ +110 and Over 4.5 -135

The Devils have definitely played weaker teams to get to this point, and Henri is effin good , and sometimes along break can leave a team sluggish versus fresh, but I'm going with the heart of the Devils in game 1 even though I think the Rangers win series.

Pressure is on the Devils to take game 1 after being rested for a week.. Rangers after playing another game 7 sat. nite will be ready but not as rested as we would like.Good news is that at least they been home since thursday and they are statring in the Great Garden,.Henri again had us cash another 1st period under1.5 .bet even though the books finally caught up to the best winning trend we have been part of. and now setting those lines at -170 or better.Only 1 game all playoffs has mor than 1 goal been scored in the first Ive been posting this trend since January,Henri closed the season going 30-10 under 1.5 1st period. And 13-1 in the playoffs The bad part is the rangers dont score early either,But from a betting point its been money in the bank. Anyway the rangers have out hit out skated and have killed penalties better than any team left inthe playoffs. For the devils to take this series they need to take these 1st 2 games at MSG,good luck,.Rangers are tougher ,bigger and have the better goaltending,at this point.Yes Marty is still great but hes not as young ,and dont think he could put this team n his back to beat a better Ranger team Ido think edge tonite is with the Devils, but overall the Rangers should be meeting LA in the finals after disposing of the overated Devils in 6 lets go Rangers
