Covers.com ups your odds with new matchup pages

At Covers.com, we’re always trying to keep you one step ahead of the books.

That means constantly creating new and innovative handicapping tools so that you can quickly research and discuss your bets to get the best value for your buck.

In keeping pace with the rapidly-adjusting sports betting market, we’ve unveiled our re-engineered matchup page, putting everything you need to know about betting on a game at your fingertips.

Some of the features are familiar, while others have been given an upgrade. And there are plenty of new capping gadgets as well.

We reformatted the matchup page to a more modern Web 2.0 look, making it easier to highlight what you need, collapse what you don’t, and quickly navigate all this information so you can chase the best odds available. This new look also allows Covers.com to efficiently add and drop tools as well as improve on current features.

The MLB and NHL features are active now, with NBA coming in early May. The NFL and college sports will follow soon.

Here’s a brief rundown of some of the improvements and innovations featured on our new matchup pages:

Consensus Analysis

Wondering which side the betting market is leaning towards? Find out who the popular pick is and why with our expanded consensus analysis. We’ve beefed up the consensus info, showing sides and totals action, along with instant access to your Survivor Streak picks and the official game thread, so you can talk to fellow sports bettors and get their two cents on the game.

Line History

Before, our line history options forced you to bounce back and forth between pages, wasting valuable time. Now, with our brand new line history graph, you can see where the numbers opened and where they’re going, along with inside action reports at each price.

Just hover over the marked spots on the graph and you instantly get a report on the percentage of action on both sides. If you’re looking for more in-depth line history, just click on the link at the bottom of the graph for minute-to-minute odds updates from some of the biggest books offshore and in Las Vegas.

A Look Back

Anyone who has used Covers.com’s matchup pages before recognizes this beauty, giving you past results between the two teams in action. While all that info still remains, we’ve added a look-ahead spot.

For baseball, bettors will be able to see the remaining games in the current series, along with projected pitchers, as well as glance at the next three series on the schedule.

Pitchers/Umpires

Again, for those familiar with our matchup page, this baseball betting tool is an everyday option, displaying detailed records on starting pitchers and the projected umpire crew working that game.

In the older version, this required you to click away from the matchup page. But now, with the use of the easy tabs at the top of the section, MLB cappers can navigate swiftly between not only stats for the featured starters and umps, but also new breakdowns for bullpens and the entire rotation.

If you need a closer look at the starters, click on the in-depth link at the bottom to display current records, previous starts and recent meetings with the opposing team – all without leaving the matchup page.

Statistical Analysis

For you puck heads, our revamped NHL matchup page features a new breakdown of stats, separating success by period, special teams, and goaltending, allowing you to compare those underlying figures to give you the edge. You can even split those statistics into home and away, favorites and underdogs, and over the last 10 games.

Power Rankings

Trying to get a handle on a line before the odds are released? Check out the Covers.com power rankings for estimated moneyline values for MLB and NHL.

We’ve added a slick new sidebar, highlighting both teams’ current standings, as ranked by Covers Experts’ pro handicappers. You can also go to the full power rankings by clicking the link at the bottom of the section.

News

Perhaps one of the most exciting improvements to our matchup page is a retooled news feed, streaming breaking news from local papers, beat writers, and league insiders, giving you a unique look at your bets.

On top of that, we’ve added a direct line to each team’s official Twitter feed for instant info on player injuries, travel troubles and lineup moves. We’re also planning to add Twitter feeds from the most popular and useful beat writers and insiders, putting you right in the locker room as the news breaks.

Old Favorites

You’ll find all your handicapping standbys on our new matchup page. Injury reports have been given a shot in the arm, displaying the player, their injury and updates, along with the team’s record and winnings without that player in the lineup.

Team trends are still a key component of our matchup page. You’ll find the hottest trends featured in that section, including head-to-head trends, as well as have the option to dig even deeper with our exclusive in-depth trends.

Weather remains a huge factor when handicapping baseball and football. Our instant weather report is still available, giving you up-to-the-minute forecast for game day as well as the extended five-day forecast.

The Matchup Edge, a quick-hitting handicapping tool, remains a staple of the matchup page, breaking down the key components for both sides and giving the edge to one side or the other.

The new matchup pages are not an improvement. The old format was much easier to read and understand. Where are things like "today's starters" where we can compare their stats on one page, day/night, home/away? Where is the section that shows each team's record for each game of a series? And why does the "recent trends" section provide information that is not even applicable to the current matchup (ex: Rockies are 0-6 in their last 6 games as a road favorite of -151 to -200; Under is 2-0-2 in Rockies last 4 games as a road underdog of +151 to +200; Under is 3-0-1 in Pirates last 4 games with the total set at 9.0-10.5; Over is 6-0 in Correias last 6 starts a home underdog)? This info is useless as as the Pirates are currently -110 and the total is 7.5. I don't get it. As they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it...

There is an in-depth option under Today's Starters to see all the information that you mentioned in your initial comment. You can access it without leaving the page. The trends piece is being looked at and we appreciate the feedback.

I hate to rain on anybody's matchup page parade, but I definitely prefer the old way Covers did the matchup pages in both baseball and hockey. Before, most of the handicapping factors I care about were on the first page. Now it seems I need to use an extra two or three links to find out things in baseball such as who's umpiring and what their stats are, stadium layout, team bullpen stats, as well as goaltender stats and days rest team performance in hockey. Quite honestly, power ranking and matchup edges on the first page are useless to me as I already have a pretty good idea of why teams are good or bad, which I suppose comes from years of following these sports and, for better or for worse, my many years of handicapping experience. On the plus side, I like the way the News part of the new first page is laid out in both hockey and baseball as I especially like reading the Covers previews.

Could you expand the series history in MLB to more than ten games? For all the other sports ten games of history works fine, but for baseball, they play twice as many games as NBA and NHL, and I'm missing the what I think was at least 15-20 games of history.

Covers' like the new look but it'd be nice to add the Ump assignment for any ongoing series to the Matchup page. If not you force me to shoot some traffic to MLB.com. Thanks! (Thumbs Up Emoticon)

@Gbogbunn -- Scroll down under the "Last 10" and you'll see Pitchers/Umps. There's a tab on the right side that will let you access the expected ump & his stats. Hope that helps.

umpires should be kicked out of baseball - it should all be done electronically and with instant replay's - these old farts are ruining the game for the fans and players - the strike box that tv has should be the only thing that says if it's a ball or a strike.

It would be nice if the umpire tab in MLB actually had ump info instead of saying it is not available at this time.

Umps for opening games of series aren't released until just hours before the game, so that's the issue there.

Post did not display properly. Please return 'Series Game Records' to the Matchup page. It is an invaluable part of MLB handicapping. There's already a topic in the help forum. Thanks!
