Covers.com's Super Bowl XLVI staff picks

Everyone has an opinion on Super Bowl XLVI, including our staff members. Covers.com’s editorial crew gives their picks for Sunday’s Big Game, including the side, total, Super Bowl MVP and their favorite prop play.

Good luck and enjoy!

Jon Campbell – Covers.com senior editor

Side: Giants +2.5 - I just think they're the better team right now, especially on defense. A terrible pick or two by Eli Manning will make it interesting though.

Total: Under 54 - Neither team has given up more than 24 points in its past five games.

MVP: Victor Cruz +800 - Cha, cha, cha.

Favorite prop: First to appear on TV: Abby (-120) or Gisele (-120)? - I think most disagree with me here, but Eli gets the nod over Brady in this category. Give me Abby with the even odds.

Ashton Grewal – Covers.com associate editor

Side: Giants +2.5 – Am I a week late betting the Giants? Probably. Having them at +3.5 would be much better but I don’t think it’ll matter. G-Men get the better of Brady and Belichick again and win the game outright.

Total: Under 54 – I’m late on this one, too. Does that mean I’ve got some agreement from the sharp bettors on this play? Probably not.

MVP: Eli Manning +180 – Eli to brother Peyton after Sunday’s game: “Hey bro, how many Super Bowl rings do you have? One? That’s cool, I’ve got two and two Super Bowl MVP trophies, and I’m five years younger than you, and I’ve got a lifetime supply of double-stuff Oreos. Just sayin’.”

Favorite prop: Will both teams make 33-yard or longer field goals? Yes +155 - Go kickers!

Larry Hartstein – Covers.com NFL writer

Side: Giants +2.5 - It's a tossup, so I'm grabbing the points.

Total: Under 54 - Pats will run more than they did last time (49 passes, 24 rushes) to slow down New York's pass rush, shortening the game.

MVP: Eli Manning +180 - Belichick will scheme to take away Cruz, but New England can't cover Nicks, Manningham, Ballard and Bradshaw too.

Favorite prop: Giants will have more penalty yards (-110) - New England has been flagged three times in two playoff games, for a total of 25 yards. Brady and Belichick get treated like royalty.

David Purdum – Covers.com columnist

Side: Patriots -2.5 - Rarely do you get a chance to go against the hype when betting the Patriots. I’m taking the opportunity.

Total: Over 54 - Both teams rank in the Top 10 in red-zone touchdowns. Just call me Joe Public with the favorite and the over.

MVP: Tom Brady +110 - I don’t care that the odds aren’t great, if the Patriots win, Brady will be the MVP.

Favorite prop: Longest touchdown under 47.5 yards (-110) - The Patriots defense defines the cliché “bend but don’t break”. They’re not going to give up the big play. On the other side, the Pats don’t have the deep threat needed to score a 48-yard touchdown.

Jason Logan – Covers.com associate editor

Side: Patriots -2.5 – I want to cheer for the Giants but the Cowboys fan inside of me just won’t let it happen.

Total: Under 54 – I believe we’re going to see more touches from the running backs than expected. It’ll be under but just but a hair.

MVP: Wes Welker +1,000 – Welker has been very quiet in the past three games. And with all the attention being paid to the tight ends, he’ll step up and have big day for Brady and friends.

Favorite prop: Tom Brady total rushing yards over 7.5 (+100) – With the Giants putting the pressure on Brady, expect him to run for his life at least two or three times Sunday.

I have never seen the public love an under in a big game so much. This means I am for sure going to take a look at the over.

Each year Vegas figures a way to outsmart the millions of part-time players who want action on "the big game". They could settle for split action on sides and totals and just load up on the vigorish but that's not been their practice in the past 10 Superbowls or more. Invariably, one side gets bet more and the opposite occurs. This year the number's been stuck on -3 for 10 days. I think the smart money is on New England to cover by 4 or more. I also think that the over is the play since the Superbowl tends to be the game where points pile up faster than normal and defensively these teams have not adjusted that well all season. I think both coaches "plan" on a shootout. Weird shit happens in big games, I just hope the weird shit this year is a missed extra point or a safety.

I hope the pat's use the whole field on offense, to wit the long pass, the giants focus heavily on ten to twenty yards down field on defense, giants have been beaten deep on several times during the playoffs, also pats defense has been playing well, and are under the radar, I'm taking the pat's -2 1/2
