Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets

Dallas Stars at Washington Capitals (-165, 5.5)

Forgive us for not falling head-over-heels in love with the Capitals just yet.

So far this season they’ve been hard to read. Some nights you see a solid commitment to defense and an offense that jumps all over its chances while lighting it up on the power play. Then there are the games like Saturday’s 5-3 loss to the New York Islanders, who had lost six straight heading into the contest.

Washington jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the first intermission, but then let the Islanders tie the game in the second before completing the comeback in the third.

“We had them,” coach Bruce Boudreau told reporters. “I think if we had of come out in the second period as we had come out in the first, and I think we knew that if we could have got that next goal it probably would have been over, but we didn’t, and once we let them get back in the game. You let a team in, especially a team that’s been losing, and they feel it and you’re in trouble.”

Sounds like the same old story to us. With the way Jamie Benn (points in five straight) and the Stars are going right now, they’ll give the Caps everything they can handle. Dallas has won four of its last five and just dropped Carolina 5-2 on the road.

Pick:
Stars

Minnesota Wild at Calgary Flames (-140, 5)

Outside of Minnesota, there hasn’t been a lot of buzz over the Wild. Not yet, anyway.

Minnesota is hot on Edmonton’s heels for top spot in the Northwest division and has won four straight heading into Tuesday’s game. And it’s not just a four-game winning streak, it’s two wins over Detroit, a 5-1 pasting of the Canucks and a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Blues.

"Guys are buying in, believing that,” rookie defenseman Justin Falk told reporters. “We're battling out there, competing for each other to push each other to be better. You can see we're playing great-looking hockey, that's for sure."

No kidding. The Wild have allowed just three goals over the winning streak and goaltender Josh Harding was just named the league’s first start of last week after he won three games with a .968 save percentage.

With Minnesota winning 10 of its last 13 against Calgary, we see a live dog here.

Pick: Wild

NASH has some work to do if they're gonna come back from a 2 goal deficit this late but even with the L in that game it's a 7-3 for about a nickel. Lets keep the mo-jo a flowin' tomorrow.

ok, I'll bite ... key factors include 1. matchups (between players, team systems, goalies) 2. goals for/against for team generally AND against opponent 3. penalty kill %/power play % 4. motivations and psychological factors (bad blood, loss in playoffs previous year, bad run, player traded and now playing against former team) etc) 5. coaching 6. prior history 7. past 10 record (streaks) 8. value betting (great team being a dog cos on the road, home dog getting a big tag, etc) 9. puckline v moneyline (the odds, which dictate value - normally, taking big faves (-175 and above bad long-term strategy) 10. gut instinct/luck 11. over/under plays (goalies, team D vs team O) 12. parlays (like any sport, these are iffy bets if you parlay 3 teams or more, but some like to parlay 2 teams to minimize juicey). 12. is the game on TV (bet)? Do you like the team? 13. Luck (yes, I repeated that) ... bol

He'll be back shortly he's way to good not to be. He is a bit of a headcase like many tenders. I was really surprise Lindy who's his only coach in the bigs ever sat him B2B as a healthy scratch. It shows the team everyone is gonna be held accountable but also may have messed with his number 1's confidence a bit. And I've been watching Enroth for awhile and he's pretty damn good too so I think that made the call a little easier to make.

Anyone liking leaves panthers over 5.5? the more i looked into it the more tempting it sounds. toronto is the worst in te nhl on the penalty kill only klling it a little over 70 % of the time! and fla ranks with on the PP in the nhl. With torontos goalie issues i guarantee panthers can put up 3-4 goals and its safe to say with the way toronto has played this year being at home they will put up some goals also. Really like this over especially at the value going for it. GL to all! also leaning on western mich +12 and NIU OVER 66! gl to all tonight!!

Love the last two weeks of Big MAC Attack for college football. I follow both the MAC and Big East conferences more then the others. Western Michigan-Toledo should go over. Toledo is going ot have a bit of a hangover form last weeks crushing 63-60 loss. West Mich is still in it and ask U-conn form the Big East about how quickly WMU can put up points. I bet both the over and West Mich to both cover and win though I will use in game betting at 5 dimes to hedge to win bet if WMU gets any sort of lead. Between Bowling Green and Northern Illonoise lay the points and bet NI to cover mobving line to 6 1/2. Bowling Green is inconsistent and this is the best team in the league with the Best Quaterback too. Conferences have personalities based on talent levels and tendencies of the best schools. If you wnat to win in SEC u got to have defence, Want to win the big 10 you better be able to stop the run and run yourself. to win the Big East you got to be able to win on the road. Well in lesser talent confernece like the MAC the offenses are mroe talented then the defences. There is simply not enuf talent in college football to get 130 schools all with great defences so the bottom level schools tend to have more talent on offence then defence. Thus the MAC is an over league. The spreads are high but they often get surpassed. I also notice this phenominon happens in division 2 college football as well. the UNH Chargers in New Haven CT are 8-0 in league and we regular see 60 point totals. The offeces are way ahead of the defences in the NE 10 league. "The Hammer"
