Young: Real Madrid vs. Barcelona Champions League match is fixed

Shawn Young is a footy junkie and a former European oddsmaker. He gives us his Champions League plays and analysis each week.

BARCELONA (-1 +115) vs. REAL MADRID (3 goals under -120)

Barcelona won the first leg 2-0 in Madrid. Both teams' scrubs lost in meaningless weekend games.

Bet Barcelona or nothing: This tie has been fixed for Barcelona to win.

The first leg was rigged outright for Barcelona and this game needs to be a convincing win for them to put the first leg out of people's minds. With Pepe and Sergio Ramos suspended here for Real by a crooked referee and the manager banished, it shouldn't be too tough for Barcelona to pile on a few goals.

“Come, come now,” you say. “Fixed? Surely Barcelona was just the better team?”
Real Madrid could be on the wrong end of match fixing.
I assure you my tinfoil hat is not on too tight. It's on just tight enough.

Barcelona did have more of the ball in the first hour, but everyone knew it would be so. Real was playing only to counterattack in the first 75 minutes, then bring their offence on late. By sending off Pepe after an hour for never even touching his diving opponent, German ref Wolfgang Stark played his part and Real was doomed.

Somebody has been pulling strings for Barcelona in recent years. This is only the latest piece of fraud.

The 2009 semi leg at Chelsea was a draw stolen by ref Tom Henning Ovrebo for Barcelona. Ovrebo then shafted Fiorentina in the next year's competition. He was thus dropped from consideration for the World Cup.

Ref Frank de Bleeckere couldn't quite steal last year's semi against Inter Milan, but Inter played down a man for an hour. Inter was given five cards to Barcelona's one in the second leg.

And looky-looky, who is Tuesday's ref? Frank de Bleeckere. What a surprise.

We've seen other examples of fraud in this competition: Roma bought referee Michel Vautrot for 50,000 pounds in the 1984 semi win over Dundee United. Olympique Marseille paid off anyone and everyone to win the title in 1993. Only the domestic bribery charges with Valenciennes stuck, but Marseille was banned from Europe and relegated in France regardless. Chairman Bernard Tapie went to prison on related matters.

It's not just Barcelona matches either: German and Swiss police arrested 17 people in 2009 for Champions' League and Europa League fixing. Debrecen players Vukasin Poleksic and Norbert Meszaros were banned two years and 18 months respectively for fixing in 2008.

Finally, Real and Barcelona have their own murky histories. Barcelona allegedly bought the refs in the 1960-61 European Cup tie, but Barcelona diehards claim it was payback for a 1943 cup game that Generalissimo Franco's security police forced Barcelona to lose: Given no choice in 1943, up 3-0 after the first leg, Barcelona over-enthusiastically lost 11-1, with the goalkeeper quickly banned for life.

This current series has been fixed for Barcelona over Real's objections. It was plain for all to see on Wednesday. If you want to keep your money in your pockets to bet Monday Night Raw next week because it's more honest, go ahead. I'm betting on another disgusting chapter in Barcelona's recent rise.

Pick: Barcelona 3, Real 0

Some of us that live on this side of the pond know as much about football as people in Europe. It's the WORLD'S GAME. I would like to think that the only bullshit call here was PEPE's card that led to Barcelona's 1st goal. With Ramos gone as well, lets just give this fing game to Barce. I'm a pissed REAL fan. The first game should have been a 0/0 tie. Then today's contest would have been tremendous. Instead we are left with a weaker MADRID side that would have to win 3 to 0, in Barcelona. NOT F%$^ing possible. I would pray to the football gods that MADRID could do it today. If we get up 2, the Refs would surely give Ronaldo a red card just for scoring. THIS IS BULLSHIT!!!!!

And don't forget that Elvis has been seen at the Camp Nou! :D I'm afraid you really shit the bed with this article, Shawn. I hope Barca win it 3-0 now, in the hope that your delusion stretches to an "I-told-ya-so". That would probably be the funniest thing ever posted on this site.

To all those who think there's no way that a soccer match could possibly be fixed, you clearly, CLEARLY know nothing about FIFA, which is easily the most corrupt sports organization in the entire world. And that's saying something with organizations like the BCS, the NBA (who have had some of the worst playoff refereeing decisions in the history of sports) and so on. Look, FIFA does whatever they want, with Sepp Blatter calling the shots. An example was FIFA handpicking a ref who would make sure that France beat Ireland in World Cup qualifying. And he did this on a ridiculous call - and yet, FiFA still won't action instant replay. Ditto the Germany/England game in the WC, and while I don't think Lampard's disallowed goal would definitely have changed the outcome, it's clear the FIFA got the result they wanted. AGAIN. Soccer is a beautiful game when played correctly. But with Sepp Blatter at the helm, it's become an international joke. While Sepp gets his pockets lined again and again (no coincidence that there was a corrupt world cup selection process with people selling votes...)

While Barca's antics were pretty deplorable - Alves and Busquets in particular for their usual diving and rolling around, Madrid deserved to lose fair and square. Having all that talent at his disposal and then starting the game with no strikers on the pitch, Mourinho got it badly wrong and, despite Alves pathetic reaction, Pepe was always running the risk of a red card with a high footed challenge - you don't always have to make contact for a red to be given. How about Pepe just keeping his foot down and not giving the ref a reason to pull out a card? The article writer seems to fall back into lazily blaming the 'fix' rather than analyse Mourinho and Madrid's tactical failings - and not one mention of Messi's incredible second goal! I agree that Barca got lucky against Chelsea in 2009, but last week, Mourinho got found out.

The only thing that needs "fixing" is to not intermingle the words soccer and sport. Keep that useless game in Europe where it belongs.

GOOGLE TRANSLATOR: The truth is that reading these things, my blog is much more information every week about football, and the money it charges is a good person could give me what to write here I do not understand way back to the year 43, when none of these players were born today, and it was another era. Let's see, the people, after hearing the news conference Mou, for you do not know, Madrid coach, after losing the first leg 0 to 2, only know how to say, that's all they have given to Barcelona, ??I still think, you have to think all that being said, the two references that makes theft of party should be seen, and those occasions said that he favored Barcelona, ??there are many other moves in the game that benefited him. The first leg in Madrid, Lass had to have been expelled by the number of kicks he gets, and the expulsion of Pepe, I saw a program made after the game, because slow motion with multiple angles, they could not agree the coterie , imagine the referee in milliseconds. Today we will see a Madrid should be different from the Bernabeu, there are way to the expulsion playing in his field, well, waiting for the counterattack, Mou with Inter did the same in Barcelona and it went well, but today must attack, and reduce the 0 to 2, so that the spaces will be larger for the Barcelona game, the football field of the Catalans is great, especially wide, and I think Pep have learned not to become crazy and attack, but will have to dislodge the ball and locals. One result is difficult, because Barcelona is what interests him through to the final, you can afford to lose even.

i do agree with him on the score though.. this game could be as much as 3-1 barcelonna... real will have no choice but to push ahead, exposing the inevitable "BACK DOOR GOAL"... GOOD LUCK TO ALL... watch out for the public money to go on REAL THINKING THAT IT CANT GET ANY WORSE AFTER LAST WEEK... IT CAN :) I agree though the post was a little paranoid... like aliens and shit.. he probably thinks every bad pick is a "fix"
