Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs (-142, Off)

After three consecutive subpar starts, Ryan Dempster welcomes the arrival of the Brewers, against whom he has enjoyed incredible success throughout his career.

Dempster owns a 13-3 record against the Brew Crew with a 2.69 ERA. He is 2-0 vs. Milwaukee this season and has held Corey Hart to 1-for-23 lifetime, but he settled for a no-decision in an error-plagued loss in their last meeting.

"We have to win no matter who we're playing against," Dempster said. "The more this season keeps getting later and later, the more losses pile up. We have to win more games, that's the bottom line."

The Brewers counter with lefty Manny Parra, who is 0-1 in four appearances against the Cubs with a 5.84 ERA. He has only one quality outing in his last six starts.

The Cubs are batting .302 against lefties in their last 10 games and should be plenty motivated after Monday's embarrassing 18-1 defeat.

Pick: Cubs

Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates (+137, 8)

Despite taking a no-decision in his last outing, Reds righty Johnny Cueto remains one of the hottest and most underrated pitchers in baseball with a 4-0 record and 1.55 ERA over his last seven starts.

Cueto is 2-0 against the Pirates this season and 8-2 for his career, carrying an even 3.00 ERA. He brings a 15-inning scoreless streak against the Bucs into this one, including a complete-game shutout on May 11.

"We appreciate what he's done and we appreciate the progress he's made," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "A lot of people are thinking he should be further ahead than he is now, but we don't. We think he's right on course to being an outstanding pitcher."

Pittsburgh answers with righthander Jeff Karstens, who is 0-3 lifetime against the Reds with a 6.45 ERA. He lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his last start vs. Cincy and the Bucs' bullpen is a question mark after trading away closer Octavio Dotel and another reliever.

The Reds are batting a solid .294 against righties in their last 10 games to the Pirates' .225. With Cincy seeking the NL Central crown and the Bucs battling for the basement, look for the Reds to batter the Bucs.

Pick: Reds

4-0 to start the day on posted earlier plays. Thanks KID for wind reprt from Wrigley, but figured game would go OVER with two lousy teams. Love the UNDER 9 in LAA/BALT game, CHISOX/DET UNDER 9, and TB/MIN OVER 8 for the 7:00 games, with a lean to FLA to beat Philly. As always, GLTA

NUGS any thoughts on your Angels today, little steep but Matusz is struggle-uggling with 18 runs in his L13 innings of work..yikes I would look RL cuz -145 is high but the RL -1.5 os just +115 so thats only 60 cents of swing. Not a good idea to make a habit of betting on teams playing as bad as the Angels but they are facing the Lowliest of O's................................................. Also liking TB RL tonight. Just looked at Bakers numbers for MINNY and he is decent at home with a 3.99 era and 7-3 record but nasty on the road 2-6 6.17. Price has been deadly all year. His numbers L3 look a little off but that was due to one bad start in N.Y when he gave up 7 earnies in 5 innings. MINNY is still banged up and TB is hot as hell. TB RL-1.5 all day for a deuce.

Add me to the list of losers yesterday. I won 1 and lost 3, for minus 2.3 units. Today I like two juicy favorites (Angels and Rangers) with pitchers that have been performing well and they are playing bad teams, and then I'm trying the Padres again as dogs, and also the OVER 8.5 in the Braves/Muts game. Pelfrey has been a mess in his last 6 starts, not lasting more then 5.2 innings and in 5 of those 6 starts he gave up 4 or more runs. On the other side, Medlen was in the bullpen for a while but in his last 2 starts he gave up 5 runs in 6 innings and 3 runs in 5 innings and the Total has gone OVER in his last 3 starts. OVER 8.5 (even) BRAVES Medlen vs Mets Pelfrey, 1 unit............. Angels -142 Santana vs BALT Matusz, to win 1 unit............. San Diego +130 LeBlanc vs L.A. Padilla, 1 unit............... Texas -150 Wilson vs SEATTLE Fister, to win 1 unit.........Good Luck to those on the same sides.

I was gonna try the Braves Over with ya as well but woke up early enough to trade it out for this Cubs Over which started slow has made it in thanks to the Brewer bully. If it hadn't I probably would have came back with ATL Over to cover it up and or if I was still an action junkie probably would try it even after hitting this early one. BOL on it I'll be hoping like hell Bravos finally start hitting with RISP which has been non-existent for the last week or so and the Phillies are right outside the door!

Pretty flat night when your only win is the Baltimore Orioles LOL - Wow that means it could have been a lot worse to think the O'no's were the only ones trying to help ya out. Blow Jays just had to get 2 more meaningless runs top 9 to skunk my Under but from the looks of it just an all out wacky night the way most of the games went. Those are the kind of nights I'm glad I don't try and call a ton of daily plays anymore because I woulda lost my ass for sure. 1-2 is a lot more manageable and easier to pick up the pieces and recover from within the next few days than going something like 3-6. Anyhow whoever had a winning day yesterday consider yourself more lucky than good for at least that round. Time to try to avoid b2b losing nights since late June but trying to do it with totals and the way they've been going lately I'm really pushing it -- MIL/CHC OVER 9=====+===== LAA -140 & OVER 9=====+===== HOU/STL OVER 7

Tough night on the books yesterday but I wish that was the worst news I received on Tuesday, found out I lost a good buddy on the weekend who was just 25,not good for his family especially his younger brother who I am very good friends with. Kinda puts a losing night on the books in perspective of how unimportant it really is. That said I am looking to bounce back from a nasty 205 -3.55 units night with these plays...JAYS ML +170...JAYS/NYY O 9.5 +105.....MIL ML +140....SF +170....OAK RL-1.5 pick'em...No -$ on the card so hopefully at least a 3-2 day to get back some from last night...BOL and enjoy your plays boys.

KID: Thanks for wind report in Chicago. Usually that means low scoring game. But both these teams are so bad, I expect them to either quit or beat each other up today. Dempster is not what people thought this year, and Parra gets lit up lots. Going with the OVER 9 in this game. Two good pitchers in band box Yankee Stadium will keep the game UNDER 9.5 as both teams fail to leave the yard as much as they usually do, despite power by both teams. Finally on my early games, liking CINCY against pitiful Pirates. Also looking at the OVER 7.5. As always, GLTA
