Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets

Washington Capitals at Ottawa Senators (+110, 6)

Hockey fans have had this matchup circled on the calendar ever since the Capitals and Senators started their red-hot runs.

Washington has won 14 games in a row heading into Wednesday's game in Montreal while Ottawa rebounded from its first loss in 11 games with a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames Tuesday.

The Senators took a one-goal lead in the second period but didn’t just lay back and weather the Flames’ storm in the third period. They kept pushing on offense – outshooting Calgary 10-to-6 in the final frame after being edged in the shot count in the first two periods. That offensive push is what the team needs to match firepower with the Capitals’ scoring prowess.

Senators coach Cory Clouston mixed his lines up midway through the second period, adding Jonathan Cheechoo to Jason Spezza and Milan Michalek’s line. That trio produced the game-winning goal from Spezza in the second period.

“They’re both really good players. You’ve just got to work hard trying to get open for them,” Cheechoo told the Toronto Sun of his new linemates. “You know they’re going to make some space for you.”

The win over Calgary improved Ottawa to 22-8-1-2 at home this year and was its sixth straight victory inside Scotiabank Place.

Pick: Ottawa

San Jose Sharks at Detroit Red Wings (+100, 5.5)

The Sharks are loving life on the road this season, posting a 20-6-1-1 record in opposing barns and starting their current six-game road swing with three straight wins.

San Jose bettors are loving life on the road too. Not only are they cashing in on the Western Conference’s top team but they are doing so at discount prices. Oddsmakers priced the Sharks at -135, -116 and -157 in the opening games of this road trip, which is a steal when compared to the -200 pricing or higher on San Jose at home.

Books may drop the price even more on San Jose when they come to Joe Louis Arena Thursday. The Sharks have struggled against the Red Wings, losing all three meetings with Detroit this season – the last two by 4-1 scores.

San Jose will be coming off a game in Columbus, having won eight of its last 10 heading into Wednesday. Detroit, on the other hand, has dropped three in a row and has won just three of its last 10 outings.

Pick: San Jose

Well, finaly had a winning day again yesterday with the Pens reg/Ducks reg for a +1.6u profit on the day.. Gonna try to continue my new "system" with 1-2 plays (single and/or parlays.) as it might work, but it's not easy as I'v a history of placing a ton of "action-junkie" plays in the past (thnx to LOST and Sopranso I'v manage to stay away from games I got only small leans in.. Have to atch up with LOST and got all seasons of Sopranos left :p) For today I only like Canukcs. In the last 4-5 games I'v watched Florida I started to see/feel how littled worried I was when Panthers got on the PP. They don't produce a lot of chances, their easy to figure out and got no fantasy when trying to break trough the defense... In their L5 games a poor 9.5% PP as their manage to converte only twice on 21 tries (0-10 in their L2 games where they didn't manage to score on 7 tries vs ATL..). Panthers is more dangerous on 5-vs-5, but Canucks is among top 10 with the fewest goals allowed on even strenght and I see no reason why Canucks won't do the same to Panthers as the Canes did -- kill of a penalty before scoring on the following rush... Canucks was the first play to stick out and besides them I had some small leans on Canes, Bolts and Flames + a "decent amount" lean on Kings, but im not taking the chance with Ersberg in net and they way Oilers played yesterday as they could easely have won that one.. So just for fun im trying a parlay with all my early leans for a small play Cancuks reg (+110) 2.00u to win 2.20u CAR reg/TAM ML/Flames reg/LAK reg (+1401) 0.5u to win 7.00u BOL to all

I'm a homer for the Canes but just wanted to share and FYI and this is when the Sabres play in Raleigh it's almost a home game for them based upon the transplants to NC from the north. I agree that the Canes are playing much better and have nothing to lose and agree that the Sabres are not playing well lately but I'd be very carefull betting the Canes in this one!

i have no regrets on my kings bet...i beleive ersburg's last game was vs SJ and only let in 1...he's not a bad, bad goalie so i'm not sweating it...plus his D will play tight...oilers play so sloppy...they should still get the beat down...if it simply comes down to goalies id take ersburg over dubnyk any day of the week...if it goes blow to blow in a high scoring game i can't see the kings not coming out on top...i really can't... my lines hasn't moved at all...neither the ml or the over

Darnit, I hit enter before I posted my Over on the Kings. That was my point. I added the Over 5.5 in the Kings just due to the starting goalies. Over 5.5 (-130) KINGS vs Oilers, to win a half-unit.

Sorry, i was away from Covers for a while. I made my bets on the Kings before I knew that Quick wasn't starting. I still like them to WIN, but I admit, I would not have made that PL play if I knew Quick was not going. The good news is the Oilers are not a good team and they are tired from last night. But it looks like Dubnyk is going and he has still not won a game as the starting goalie and has a Goals Against Average of 4.17. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the Kings at least win the game for my parlays.

Anyone else thinking of taking a shot with the Co-Canes tonight. This team HAS turned a corner and are playing solid team hockey. hard to believe but hey have won 3 in a row and 8 YEAH 8 of 10...bananerz. I keep waiting for BUF to break out of this slump and start winning but I subscribe to the theory that you stay on a winner and keep fading a loser. Well we have one of each here so I will go with the flow. Man if I had said a month ago that a healthy and R.Miller back stopped team would be playing in CAR as a virtual pick you would have said I was more drunk than that piss tank that hangs around here.

sevenout--good to see you back. Looking forward to some detailed posts. NHL and NCAA BB have ben going decently for me and the main people on the forums are doing pretty well. NBA has been tough; I am mostly laying off it. I have been a less frequent poster as well due to work being all time consuming while earnings blow. Hoping for things to pick up in all aspects. At least health for me and family is good.

Really looking at the BOLTS tonight at home. I was somewhat shocked to see the they have reeled off 4 straight wins and 7 of 10. I was even more surprised to see that this has come due to solid D not 5 goals per game. In T.B's last 9 games since the 8 goals they allowed to the RAGS they have given up just 2,1,0,2,3,1,2,1 and then just one again last game BOS looks like they may be getting out of their nasty slump but considering that TB is at home and playing well and the juice is a tiny -115 I have go with the DOLTZ tonight. I also like the U 5 but not as much as the side.

EDM PL+1.5 to the O 5.5 then may be a nice play with DUBNYK and ERSBERG in the nets. Speaking of goalies I see that VARLY is making his first start in the NHL in over TWO MONTHS. I have to go with the HOME TEAM who has been RED HOT themselves playing a team in a huge letdown spot and a B2B.

Okay, I went with these plays for today. I wanted to stick with only 4 plays but I could not resist the OVER in the Caps/Sens (just because the Caps are an OVER machine recently) and the UNDER in the Panthers/Canucks (because Florida has been an UNDER machine recently). So I made those two plays for half-units. At least none of my games today have a lot of juice. And I learned from JGM that there is a big ceremony in Calgary tonight to honor Jerome Iginla & Damon Langkow for their 1000th games played in the NHL. Both will be getting a silver hockey stick in a presentation before the game so I expect the fans to be loud and ready for a home victory. Good luck to everyone! OTTAWA +105 vs Washington, 1 unit. LOS ANGELES -1.5 (-110) vs Edmonton, to win 1 unit. UNDER 5 (+120) Canucks vs PANTHERS, half-unit. OVER 6 (-120) SENATORS vs Capitals, to win a half-unit. 2-team, CALGARY -140 vs Dallas, L.A. -320 vs Edmonton, 1 unit wins 1.25 2-team, Vancouver -140 vs FLA, L.A. -320 vs Edmonton, 1 unit wins 1.25

hey guys i've been a long time reader of covers forum and ive learned much thru the helpful posts that many of you have left here. So first off i wanted to give a shout out to y'all and at the same time cry a lil about the caps last night. Had a 3 team parlay going with CAP, AVS and Preds......we all know how that turned out.... As for tonight i like TB @ home, there'a always a few players that enjoy the miami weather a lil too much before a game and i like Steven Stamkos and Antero Niittymaki to continue their good play of late. Also i like CAR @ home as well...they're finding a way to win without starting goaldender Cam Ward. Look to Eric Staal to continue to demonstrate his leadership skills as the Olympics draw near. As for the WAS, im not to sure what im gonna do there....might just take the over in that one.....wish i woulda done that last night instead of them on the ML. "...its the return of the gamekilla!"

Has anyone noticed that Voukon has made 19 starts in a row! And wow, I may have to play that Under once again in the Florida game. The Panthers have gone Under in 9 out of 10, and take it further and they've gone UNDER in 14 of their last 17 games. Both Vancouver AND Florida aren't scoring much these days and they both have goalies that have more Unders then Overs.
