Atlantic City wants piece of sports-betting pie

A New Jersey Assemblyman is pointing to a record Super Bowl weekend in Las Vegas as proof Atlantic City should get into the sports gambling business, according to PolitickerNJ.com.

Louis Greenwald (D-Camden) argued Monday that the expected $100 million handle by Las Vegas sports books along with the potential economic impact on the state's sagging economy should be a wake-up call that it's finally time for Atlantic City to get into the game.

"Even without having ever hosted an actual Super Bowl game, Las Vegas is again poised to be a big winner from the ultimate football weekend," said Greenwald, sponsor of legislation to legalize sports betting in Atlantic City. "Atlantic City's economy similarly could benefit from a flood of football fans putting down a few bucks on the game and spending money on hotels and dinners."

The Assembly is scheduled to vote Thursday on the bill Greenwald co-sponsored, which would allow Atlantic City's casinos to accept in-person wagers solely on professional sports. If the bill passes and is signed by the Governer, New Jersey citizens would be allowed to vote on the issue in a General Election referendum held in November.

The state also would have to successfully overturn a federal ban on sports gambling in New Jersey. Nevada is currently the only state that allows sports wagering.

"Legal sports betting would strengthen Atlantic City's hand as the East Coast's preeminent gaming destination in the face of stiff competition from nearby slot-parlors," said Greenwald. "It may be the legal equivalent of a 'Hail Mary' pass, but fighting for legalized pro-sports gaming is a play New Jersey can't afford to pass up."

Delaware has the Tables coming in the Summer. The problem is the Mob's influence. The Mob is mostly located in NJ as well as NY Which is ironic. Never the less,If AC doesn't get this they are history.

The fact of the matter is there are more guys on the streets of Hoboken taking bets then any legal forum in A.C. could offer. It's at least worth a try.

A.C. deserves its demise. To be so greedy as they have in recent years is unbelievable. To eliminate surrender, to hit on soft 17's are you kidding me. You have to have a very strong grasp of your counting to even have a shot of walking out of there with cash now. Lower takeouts or improve odds on games and people will show up. Pretty simple really.

I heard recently that December 2009 was the first month ever that Pennsylvania had more slot handle then New Jersey - another sign of AC's demise and need for something new Vegas is still WAY better then AC, even if AC gets sports betting, but it would be a big improvement for AC

If it comes, it would be a huge lift. I would really think about opening a sports bar down there. Sundays whent he G-Men were away games, I would stay at my beach house and def be around AC more. The w/e from March on, would be huge time for people to come down as well. St.Pattys parade/ NJ HS wrestlings finals at AC 1st w/e of March, A-10 tourney the next week, then people would come a lot more often when the weather gets better. Philly day traffice on the train line even. Buses from NYC. It would be huge.

well lets see. we have numerous statements the AC is dying THEN we have a couple of "we have to have OUR way or we're not happy" anti-smoking people. ever figure out the percentage of gambles that SMOKE? Vegas has. they know that they would lose a third of their business IF they prohibited smoking in casinos. the proof is the number of local bars that stopped serving food when the Cali immigrants (it's almost always the bean sprout eating health nuts that have moved here from Cali that cause trouble) got a ban on smoking in restaurants passed a couple years ago. local bar business dropped off by a third just in time for the recession to hit.

Thank you Bill Bradley for not having sports wagering in AC. Also, the people who run the casinos missed the boat when there was a window of opportunity to in fact put in legalized sports wagering. An honest judge with an open mind will certainly overturn any ruling limiting sports wagering to Nevada. There is absolutely no valid reason why NJ can not have it. It is the states right to choose what they want. I hope it finally happens, but they should include college sports as well. Again, they are doing this wrong. They should vote yes for everything, and ask for everything, then settle for something less.

AC is on life support, I remember in the early 90's places like the Taj were packed, now they are ghost towns.

If anyone in NJ had a brain and the state wasn't already so corrupt, they would legalize sports betting...If you have been to AC recently you can see it is a DYING city...
