Nathan Ashley turned his life-long love of sports into cold hard cash when he finished first in Covers Contests’ Ultimate Race 6 last week.
Ashley, better known by his username ashflow, finished first ahead of more than 9,000 contestants in a handicapping race to 200 wins.
His final selection of Buffalo -1.5 over Bowling Green on last Wednesday’s college basketball board (Buffalo won 68-65) made him $5,000 richer and capped off a tremendous streak in which he picked winners at a near 60-percent rate over the last four months.
“Students loans will probably eat up some of it and there are some iPhone apps I've been after for a while now,” Ashley said when asked about how he would spend his winnings. “Might just have to chip in for season seats at the Louisville Cardinals’ new arena in 2010-2011.”
Ashley, an architecture student in Cincinnati, had played capping contests and fantasy sports online and decided to enter the field for the Ultimate Race 6 – the first Covers Contests race to go to 200 wins.
“Covers is a great website for team information when picking games and I finally decided to join the race,” Ashley said. “I think Ultimate Race and Survivor are the best contests out there because you have to pick multiple sports and there is a limit of how many games you can choose. I think that makes it more strategic and truly gives you a feel for the best handicappers.”
He started with a bang, putting together a 30-13-1 (69.77 percent) run in October. He continued his winning ways over the next four months, picking everything from CFL winners to college basketball totals.
Ashley says his strongest sport during the contest was college football. He opened going 0-3 in NCAAF but quickly found his form, finishing with a 32-13-1 mark against the spread. He was also tremendous at picking NBA winners, posting a 53-39-1 ATS record.
“I think the main strategy I had for this contest was to follow my gut first and foremost,” he said. “I tend to make more mistakes when I overanalyzed games. Also, when looking at games, I always looked at home stands versus road trips - especially in NBA and NHL.”
The Ultimate Race 6 drew in a record number of contestants vying for the $5,000 Grand Prize. The race goes until the first 25 cappers cross the 200-win finish line. As of Monday afternoon, nine other contestants had reached the 200-win plateau with six others standing with 199 wins. The first 10 contestants to reach 200 wins get cash prizes while the final 15 receive exclusive Covers Contests gear.
Ashley intends on returning for the Ultimate Race 7, which is expected to begin in March 2010. Anyone interested in testing their handicapping mettle in that or any of the other contests can sign up and partake for absolutely free at Covers Contests.
