NFL Underdogs: Week 9 pointspread predictions

I’ve never understood my dislike for Tom Brady. Is it the eight-figure salary, the smoking-hot wife or the cameos on Entourage?

Probably all of the above, but those things are just part of the overall reason why I’m no fan of Brady.

He was easier to root for in the beginning. He worked his butt off in college to hold off golden boy Drew Hensen and he worked even harder in the pros to ready himself when he got his shot.

But now he’s a different guy. He’s someone who’s grown accustomed to preferential treatment. It was revolting to see him point at the back judge in Week 4 against the Ravens - when Terrell Suggs almost hit him below the knee - and signal for a flag.

“We’re (quarterbacks) holding onto the ball. We’re unprotected. You’re sitting there defenseless… They deserve to get flagged.”

That’s what Brady said after the game. We here at underdogs can’t pull for a guy who has to take a silver spoon out of his mouth before he can defend himself.

I took the Dolphins out of principle in staff picks this week, but they’re not one of my favorite plays of the week. Even though the Fish always seem to give the Patriots headaches, their piss-poor secondary could be in for a long day against New England’s passing game.

I’ve got this feeling that double-digit dogs are going to start paying (4-2 last week). I took all of them this week except for the Redskins. Cleveland and Washington are two teams I won’t back regardless of the pointspread.

Time for this week’s picks:

Arizona Cardinals (+3) at Chicago Bears

The Bears didn’t win last week so much as Cleveland flat out lost it. There isn’t much of a big play element to Chicago’s offense. Most of this team’s scoring drives come off turnovers or 15-play variety.

The Bears are 3-0 straight up and against the spread at Soldier Field, but all of a sudden the Cards can’t lose on the road.

Kurt Warner’s confidence won’t be diminished after last week’s five interceptions. Most of those came off deflections and Warner’s never been a quarterback who lacks confidence.

Chicago owns just one quality win this year and that only happened because Pittsburgh kicker Jeff Reed missed a couple gimmes. Arizona, on the other hand, has wins over the Giants and Texans.

The weather looks pretty good, which means the Cards’ passing game shouldn’t be slowed down because of Mother Nature.

Pick: Cards

Houston Texans (+9) at Indianapolis Colts

This might be the biggest game in the Texans’ history. They’ve never been two games above .500, so this is unchartered territory for them.

Meanwhile the Colts are off to a 7-0 start for the fourth time since 2005. They also have a huge game against the Patriots next weekend on NBC.

Losing tight end Owen Daniels will hurt Houston, but Matt Schaub trusts his receivers and won’t hesitant to dump it off to a back. This offense is good enough to keep pace with Peyton Manning’s crew.

Pick: Texans

Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals (+3)

I understand why the Ravens are the favorites in this game, but that doesn’t mean I have to agree with it.

The Bengals can run the football and their defense can get key stops. That’s two things this team couldn’t do in years past.

Cincy’s coming off its bye which means its players are well rested and have been thinking about the Ravens non-stop for two weeks.

And, as good as Baltimore’s defense looked against Denver, I’m not ready to say the unit is back to business. The Bengals will go vertical and expose Baltimore’s sluggish secondary.

Pick: Bengals

Last week: 2-1

Season record: 12-12-1

It seems like the cool thing to do is attack Brady, say what you want suggs made contact after Brady didn't have the ball, even though he couldn't stop regardless he did. Thats a penalty, it seems like you're the one crying about it. No one says anything when a punters ran into and he makes it look like the guy body slammed him and jumped on his leg. Why does Brady get the garbage, thrown at him? Also how can you root for a guy in the beginning but not now? He's the same guy, he might be a little bit more well played, but he still cares, he never takes glory, he always says their are things he and his team can do better even when they blow out a team by 50 points. He takes the blame when his team loses. Seriously, whats not to like, probably one of the most un-selfish QB's out there.

One of the all time great QBs gets bashed by a guy named Ashton with a .500 record and on his way to a 1-2 weekend. Luckily for him, you follow his career, he doesn't follow yours.

You see what has happened? Hating on Tom Brady has become so hip, that it has become dousche to hate on him now. Good Luck, Ashton

Brady is a crybaby punk behind. He knows the league loves him and acts like a spoiled rich kid. It all started when the league INVENTED a rule on the spot and created the TUCK RULE? A clear fumble but the league also hates Al Davis and did everything it could to keep the Raiders out of the Superbowl. Even looking the other way when the franchise was caught red handed CHEATING! Pats are like the Yankees of their league, get all the calls and cry when they don't win. Greatest thing ever was watching the Giants kick their behind in the Superbowl. Hate that team like no other.....

Peyton does the same thing. They put a rule in because if star QB's (The Manning's, Brees, Brady, etc) go down the league takes a hit. Who would watch if we had 15 STL vs TB games every week? The answer is Nobody. And on that Suggs play, Brady looked to the official and the official was nodding as he reached for the flag.

Yeah your right it's not like he just missed a whole season because of a late hit. Your just jealous, also no one pays to see you do anything.

Pay attention dude! Everyone calls for fouls on every play, in every sport that offers penalties. Just because they promulgated a rule the year after Brady loses his season, he is labeled a baby. He didn't ask for the rule, the NFL did as a league to protect every QB from losing their season, and thus the teams from losing theirs. Just because you're fat and have a small pecker, and wack it to pics of his wife, you hate him. He is still entirely focused on football, and no matter what you say or write that isn't gonna change. The taste of your hair gel should be bothering you by now, so get your head out of your behind! Stop hating and start doing what you are paid to do... write about Football. You look like a jealous clown posting this article!!!

Retarded article about Brady, did you go college and take any writing classes? No wonder you write for a gambling forum Hemingway. Take a night class or pick up a copy of idiots guide to writing.

Hey fellas,

Thanks for the comments. I think we're all digging a little too deep into my Brady bashing.

I try and keep the column loose and funny whenever possible. I live on the East Coast and I'm forced to watch a good deal of New England games. I think that means you'll either love the guy or hate him. I don't really have a good reason for disliking Tom Terrific. I never really liked the Patriots.

Still, as I said in the column, you have to appreciate how hard he worked to get where he is today. I think we've all seen those pictures of him from the combine coming out of Michigan.

I don't want to give the impression that I'm a player hater. I know I stirred up some emotions when I wrote that the Shaq experience wouldn't work out in Cleveland.

The Brady rules seemed to be the hot topic of the week after Joey Porter chipped in his two cents. I had an opinion and I thought I'd donate it since this is a column. I have to agree with the posters who say Brady isn't the only player looking at the refs for flags on multiple plays. That still doesn't mean I have to like it either.

Let's get back to the talk about picks tomorrow.

What's the best bet on the board on Sunday?

I find it surprising that the public is hammering Atlanta but that line has dropped to -9. What's going on there?

I think I'm going to go large on the Eagles.

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts.

Good luck.

Bang on assessment of Brady. Interesting that you didn't mention Brady's on-field fingerpointing at teammates for dropped passes early in the season. Brady was pathetic as he openly berated teammates for missing passes that were often poorly thrown.....not accepting any personal responsibility for the failed passes. Brady was pathetic in the Pats/Broncos game, missing wide open receivers with horrendous passes. You didn't see any of the receivers berating Brady or pointing fingers......they have too much class and play like teammates, unlike Brady. i used to like to the guy but he has lost all my respect after seeing his childish antics this year.

All qb's are the crybaby's of the team simple as that so Ashton is right to a certain extent so let him have his opinion as for his picks I have them too along with Bengals and Cardinals money line. Not 100% on the Bengals, but I like both teams 50/50/

Picks, shmicks....if I have to read one more post where a moron doesn't know the difference between the words "your" and "you're" or "there" "they're" and "their", I think I'll barf! It's hard to take anyone's opinion seriously if you don't know 2nd grade grammar. You can bash the article writers (and many times it's deserved) but shut up if you don't know how to spell or use words.

I agree with the whole Brady thing 100%. A lot of athletes achcieve success and still remain cool people. This guy has let all of the people sweating his balls (like some of the guys here) go to his head. As far as the picks go, I'm all over the Texans +290 moneyline.

Like the picks, and I am now liking ATL even more just as you stated 'non-movement'.

Looking more into the Eagles, but their Jeckly/Hyde persona scares me...

As for Brady...On the field, Elite. BUT, seeing him in line getting on the plane to UK (only one in the suit) when everyone else appears to be in team sweats???? Nuff said! Official douche status in my book.

Good article on Brady...he is a crybaby......it would not be so bad but if you look at the highlights around the league you will see other QB's getting lit up ....and no flag

I am a Saints season ticket holder and just last week Drew Brees was hit in the chin with a helmet and fumbled and the Falcons recovered it for a touchdown.where was the flag on that play for leading with the helmet???????

I think the Brady rule suck.......this is football, let them play

TimTowner says:

Ashton.......have to agree........so much Bull sh---t with Brady and Belichek. Being a Jets fanatic I naturally have to hate the Patriots. However, after his "injury" and nonsense prior to Superbowl with Giants, I lost all respect for his cause and resiliance. I can see a QB being upset at a purposeful shot to injure them, but then again, this is football and the NFL. Go play friggin Golf if you want to be a box.

Like the Cards pik outright win

Like the Texans with points

Not so sure about the Bungles
