NCAAF Top 5: Biggest revenge games of 2009

Sharp handicappers are always on the lookout for motivational factors. These five games have some big ones.

Texas Tech Red Raiders at Texas Longhorns (NL), Sept. 19

The Longhorns can blame Oklahoma for last year’s BCS title game snub all they want. But it was really the Red Raiders who kept Texas from facing Florida.

Michael Crabtee hauled in a 28-yard touchdown pass with one second left to upset the top-ranked Longhorns last year in Lubbock. It was especially painful, because freshman safety Blake Gideon dropped an easy interception on the play before.

This year’s instate battle is in Austin and comes after the Longhorns’ trip to Wyoming.

Texas is 4-1 ATS at home in its last five against the Red Raiders.

Tennessee Volunteers at Florida Gators (-24), Sept. 19

New Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin has yet to shut his mouth since arriving in Knoxville. He wrongly accused Gator coach Urban Meyer of a recruiting violation then committed a half dozen himself.

He reportedly told a South Carolina recruit that he’d “be pumping gas” if he signed with the Gamecocks instead of the Vols.

You got to wonder how Meyer and the Gators will welcome Kiffin to the SEC.

Only having to give 24 seems like a gift right now.

Iowa Hawkeyes at Penn State Nittany Lions (-7.5), Sept. 26

This one should be a dandy, with the Nittany Lions trying to avenge last year’s stunning loss to the Hawkeyes as 7.5-point favorites.

Penn State was coming off a big win at Ohio State and headed into November with what looked like a clear path to the BCS title.

But Iowa upended the Nittany Lions with a winning field goal on the game’s final play.

Before jumping on board Joe Pa for the rematch, keep in mind that the Hawkeyes have won four of their last five trips to Beaver Stadium.

Oklahoma Sooners vs. Texas Longhorns (-1), Oct. 17

Looks like oddsmakers are using the old adage “you have to make someone a favorite so the squares know who to bet on.”

With revenge on their minds, these two rivals are very evenly matched, as the early line suggests.

Pay close attention to where the number ends up and ask yourself what happened in the first month of the season that made it move.

Oregon State Beavers at USC Trojans (NL), Oct. 24

In front of a national Thursday night audience, the Trojans walked into Corvalis as 25-point favorites and promptly laid an egg.

The Beavers jumped ahead 21-0 and held off a furious USC rally to deliver a blow the Trojans would not recover from.

Southern Cal will look to take out some frustration on the Beavers in L.A., where they have covered six of the last eight against OSU.

agree with 4 of them... but to put Tennessee - UF as even one of the top 20 revenge games is ridiculous... Florida was simply far superior to UT last year, and kicked their sorry fools for a reason... and that will be no different this year...

that simply does not qualify as a revenge scenario, for about 10 reasons that aren't worth getting into...

a revenge scenario is one where the motivation lays heavily in favor of one team... this does not qualify... Meyer is supremely motivated to run up the score on UT... that is well known... this is NOT a revenge scenario from a handicapping perspective...

you want a couple of revenge games? try a couple from week 1... Cal-Maryland and Oregon-Boise... those are much better qualifiers for a revenge scenario than UT-Florida...

i would also argue heavily against OU-Texas... just because one team loses doesn't make it a revenge scenario... the fact is that this game had no adverse affect on OU... Texas is the one that wants revenge, even though they won the game... everyone knows that! Texas won this game, but got screwed out of the Big 12 championship game... if anyone wants "revenge" it is Texas... they are gonna be way more motivated in this game than OU will...

again... not every game is a revenge game just because one team lost... one team always loses... there has to be something that creates extra motivation for one team heavily over another team...

OU losing to Boise and Cal losing to Maryland... those were the memorable losses for each team, both with extenuating circumstances, and both games were turning points in a season that was going well prior to those games... THOSE are revenge scenarios...

how was the UF-UT game a turning point for UT? what? they got even worse after that?

sorry... you gotta think a little more than just picking the high profile games and saying the team that lost last year is in revenge mode...

Iowa-PSU... yes, big time! OSU-USC... definitely! TT-Texas... no doubt about it!

3 out of 5 ain't bad...

would love to hear anyone out there who can fill out this top 5 list... throw out UT-Florida and Texas-OU... those aren't even on the radar...

I hear you, Ice, regarding Fla.-Tenn. My headline is a little misleading. If you read the top, I state these games have the motivational factors that most sharp handicappers look for, not necessarily revenge.

Good question on two other revenge games, though ... I might look at UNLV-San Diego State. The Aztecs beat the Rebels to prevent them from becoming bowl eligible last season. Also, Central Michigan wasn't thrilled about ending the regular season by losing to Eastern Michigan.

Good stuff .. .thanks for reading.

UNLV-SDSt isn't a bad one... living in Vegas, i know firsthand how much of a foldjob that was by UNLV... i would have to look into it a bit more to see how UNLV is approaching that one... i'm never too excited about betting on the Rebels, but they should be better this year...

personally, i don't think UT-UF favors Tennessee from a motivational standpoint, specifically because Kiffin has given Meyer reason to lay the wood to them... if that wasn't the case, UF might be looking past that game when it rolls around... but as it is, i think Florida is gonna be geared up to really put a hurtin' on them...

i think the Iowa-PSU, OSU-USC and TT-Texas games that you wrote up are arguably the top 3 revenge games... especially among high-profile teams...

I would add Oregon going to Boise after being beat in Eugene last year as a solid revenge game for opening night.

WVU ... Ore.-Boise St. is a good one ... The Ducks have been talking noise too ...

The BIGGEST revenge game will be when Florida meets Ole Miss for the SEC Championship...and gets payback for that fluke one-point loss to the Rebels last year...Florida's ONLY loss!! Leave no doubt,Coach Meyer...run it up!! Make the rebels REMEMBER, FOREVER, THE NIGHT THEY PLAYED THE GATORS IN 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ice4Blood says:

well, Lucky... if that happens then nobody could really argue with it... but that game isn't on the schedule, and there is definitely no guarantee they will be playing Ol Miss... LSU and Bama will both have something to say about it...

Virginia Tech Vs. East Carolina has to be a revenge game for Tech
