With the NHL trade deadline approaching, many big names are rumoured to be on the move. Here are five trades I'd like to see happen:

Phoenix Coyotes send Olli Jokinen to the Montreal Canadiens for Sergei Kostitsyn, Ryan O’Byrne and a first round pick.

Why the deal makes sense for Phoenix:

The Coyotes are struggling on and off the ice. With a trip to the playoffs unlikely, Phoenix has little use for Olli Jokinen and his $5 million plus salary this year and next.
Sergei Kostitsyn and Ryan O’Byrne are young, talented and NHL ready. Combined, their salary is a fraction of Jokinen’s.

Why the deal makes sense for Montreal:

Sergei Kostitsyn and Ryan O’Byrne were in coach Guy Carbonneau’s doghouse before getting sent down to the AHL. With plenty of young talent in the organization, Kostitsyn and O’Byrne are expendable.

The Canadiens need veteran presence and leadership. Olli Jokinen, is a former captain and 90-point player. He is a substantial upgrade over centre Robert Lang (out for the season).

How this will impact futures odds:

Trading for Jokinen will improve their chances, but at +2000, the Habs will need to show they are over their slump before this bet has value.

Florida Panthers send Jay Bouwmeester to the Philadelphia Flyers for Joffrey Lupul, Ryan Parent and a second round pick.

Why the deal makes sense for Florida:

Jay Bouwmeester is a UFA after this season and will likely not re-sign with the team. Jacques Martin has publicly stated he needs quality players in exchange for Bouwmeester.
Florida would acquire two players that can be immediately inserted into its lineup: Lupul, an emerging star, and Parent, a blue-chip prospect.

Why the deal makes sense for Philadelphia:

The Flyers are deep at forward and can afford to part with some of their young talent. No one on the Flyers blue line is putting up significant numbers. Bouwmeester will easily become the Flyers No. 1 defenseman. The Flyers will have to get creative to ensure they are under the salary cap, but it’s worth the effort to acquire a player of Bouwmeester’s caliber.

How this will impact futures odds:

At +2000 to win the Cup, the addition of Bouwmeester makes the Flyers a legitimate contender in the East.

Anaheim Ducks send Scott Niedermayer to New Jersey for Matt Corrente, Matt Halischuk and a second round pick.

Why this makes sense for Anaheim:

The Ducks get rid of the remainder of Niedermayer’s salary, acquire future second line defenseman Matt Corrente and well-rounded, hard-working forward Matt Halischuk.

Why this makes sense for New Jersey:

New Jersey does not have an offensive defenseman on its roster. Scott Niedermayer would be a perfect fit returning home to the place where he won two cups.

How this will impact futures odds:

Barring an unforeseen Ducks winning streak, betting on Anaheim should be avoided. If the Devils add Niedermayer, they are worth monitoring at +1200.

St. Louis Blues send Keith Tkachuk and Jay McKee to the Calgary Flames for Matthew Lombardi, Leland Irving and a first round pick.

Why this deal makes sense for the Blues:

Rental player Keith Tkachuk could fetch decent prospects and Jay McKee has fallen out of favor with Blues management.

In Lombardi the Blues would receive a versatile, highly-touted centre yet to live up to his potential. Leland Irving is a top goaltending prospect that could be NHL ready as early as next season.

Why this deal makes sense for the Flames:

Keith Tkachuk has the ability to play centre and could become Jarome Iginla’s linemate. Tkachuk has the experience the Calgary Flames need for a deep playoff run and his grit fits in well with the Mike Keenan-Darryl Sutter mold. Jay McKee provides the Flames with some much-needed depth on defense.

Impact on futures odds:

If Calgary executes this trade it will be one of the deepest teams in the NHL. The Flames may be worth a look at +2000.

Not that any of these trades will happen, but I don't think that the phoenix trade would even be allowable. Phoenix is barely over the minimum cap number and couldn't dump the $3m difference.

I'd love to see Niedermeyer return to the Devs. Hopefully Lou can make this happen

The Flyers arent going to deal Ryan Parent. the love the kid,

Lupul might go, but no chance parent goes. if they were will to take randy jones then it is a possibility, but they would need to move more then just those two to make the salary work.

Hey I just bet on the Devs to win the Cup at +800...

Marty is back and this team is talented.

Remember Niedermeyer's playoff beard? That thing was terryifying and reason alone to try to acquire him.

Who's with me?

The Flyers could definitely use Bouwmeester, but why would the Panthers want Lupul? He has been moved several times already in his career. That is usually a sign that he is an underachiever and/or a douchebag. Salary dump angle? Yes.

1st rounder instead of 2nd round pick and the Panthers might bite on that proposed deal.

Why do the Flames need another immobile defeseman? McKee is also under contract next year for $4 million dollars. He is next to untradeable. No way the Flames give up a 1st rounder and Irving. Blues don't need a goaltending prospect. They have 2 prospects in Bishop and Allen.

Tkachuk is versatile, but I think the Blues will now stand pat or else be a buyer instead of a seller on Wednesday.

If NJ acquires Niedermayer without giving up a player on their current roster, they will be the Cup favorites IMO.

Hi Everyone.

i like the cover expert trade between Montreal & Phoenix....but Montreal has no room because the salary cap...Gainey has room for around 800 000...but if gainey able to move Dandenault the room will be around 1,2M that will be OK for the end of the season whit the Jokinen contract.

Hey Everyone

I love to see Niedermeyer go to New Jersey....Good D Good O and an amazing goalteneder.......They showed us they can beat Boston and San Jose before and I have a feeling they are the underdogs this year and can actually pull it off.....

JDiggs hit it. The Flyers will not trade Parent and nor should they.. He is playing on their #1 pairing and he is only 20yrs old. Plus even if Bouweester were on the Flyers, Timonen is their #1 D-Man... Lupol is good player and his teammates love him but he is def expendable especially with the emergence of Giroux... Bouweester makes the Flyers an immediate Cup contender, Holmgren just needs to be careful how they get him.

Flyers would need a serious "from out of nowhere" performance from their net-minding tandem, for them to seriously contend for The Cup. I don't believe that anybody honestly expects to see that happen.

Certainly it **could** happen, I just think we all know that it won't.

I too will be surprised is any of these trades go through. The Leafs seem set on trading at least one or two more of their players . . . that is something to be expected, but all this other business . . . I doubt it.

Red Wings trade W Marian Hossa to the Lightning for Bag O' Peanuts...
