Ice picks: Friday’s best NHL bets

Pittsburgh Penguins at Carolina Hurricanes (-104, 6 ½ )

Today is a huge day in Penguins history. Last season's MVP Sidney Crosby makes his debut as captain of the hockey club at the age of 20 and Pittsburgh's current owner and former Pens super star, Mario Lemieux, turns 42 years old today. The date is also huge to Crosby, considering he made his NHL debut two years ago on this date.

Crosby lost his first ever game in the league, but that was with a lackluster team that had problems beating anybody. These new Pens are filled with stars young and old and Crosby wants to make a statement to critics who think he's too young to wear the "C" on his jersey.

Pick: Penguins -106

Boston Bruins at Dallas Stars (-175, 5 ½)

The Boston Bruins haven't won a Stanley Cup since 1972, but they sure know how to work the coaching carrousel. Claude Julien makes his debut behind Boston's bench and is the club's third coach in the last three seasons.

Julien inherits a young team with several young players who want to prove to their newest coach that Boston can return to past glory. The B's are loaded at the center position and most opposing players will have to deal with 6-foot-9 inch defenseman Zdeno Chara, who is one of the most intimidating blueliners in the league.

Pick: Bruins +165

San Jose Sharks at Vancouver Canucks (-117, 5)

The San Jose Sharks are coming off a tough shootout loss to Edmonton and now less than 24 hours later must face one of the top goaltenders in the league. Roberto Luongo and the Vancouver Canucks open their season looking to defend their Northwest Division crown.

Last year Luongo lost to the Sharks in his first home game as a Canuck, but then earned three straight wins against them, allowing five goals in total in the process.

"Every team depends on their goaltender," Luongo told the Associated Press. "The goalie has to do a good job if they want to give their team a chance to win every night. It's been like that my whole life."

Pick: Under 5

I would stay away from the penguin/hurricaine game entirely to be honest, but if you play anything, play the caines... They dont wanna start off losing 2 games at home, this team won the stanley cup in `06

Looks like the under is the only thing that`ll cash in as long as they dont go to a 2-2 shootout

Matter of fact, I take that back... The caines will win tonight, they arent gonna lose the first 2 games at home

covers sucks at picking hockey... esp early in the season. Only pick I like is the penguins tonight trying to show that they are a playoff/stanley cup team this year. Bruins will blow it, they havent won on opening day since like 79 or something, Check out the other covers hockey article that basically contradicts all these picks

Philly defense is still slow, biron is unproven, and Briere will get locked down now that he isnt playing with the 4 line deep buffalo sabres. They will be vastly improved from last yr, but they were horrid in 06-07. They'll battle for the 8th spot with 6 other teams. What was Calgary thinking hiring Keenan??? Well we saw what happened last nite.. Anaheim is tired, and they are without Giguire, Scott N, Schneider, Penner and temmu...Columbus wont be that good this yr, but home openers and Hitckok behind the bench is scary....but at -115 it mite be worth the chance. I love the Sabres at home to beat Isls. Carolina lost a tought at home to Mtl..they will be hungry tonite vs Pitt..i would layoff Luongo is not focused to start the yr...

very true dwnonmluk I concure, Biron at the end of last season was impresive in the games he played. Phi also aquired 2 A1 defencemen in Timonen from Nashville @smyth both respective captans on team they came from, plus Hatcher. The forwards are to many to speak breifly about, greatd improvement on topoff when everyones healthy. Possibly Nsh gona be another Western confrence Defensive dynamo possibly along with Van, Anh, Min, Dal, And NJ in the east. Good calls on last night with Edm the odds on the game were peculuare good cash in .

Flyers will be most improved team in League this year and cuz we play in the pansy Eastern conference playoffs are a good possibility. If flyers were in west not a chance.Everyone is talking about Briere being the big pickup but the most important thing is we now have a quality goalie in Biron after many years of garbage goalies. And what about longtime Oilers captain Jason smith on D.What a steal....Smith and Joffrey Lopel for Pitkanen.Plus we picked up Timonen from Nashville to replace Pitkanen,Carter and Richards should start to blossom this year.Scotty hartnell will help too.Things are looking up in Flyer land. I know what you are thinking Bdoz-it's only one game but trust me on this.....

BRIER MVP - NEVER -flyers might have a slim chance at the playoffs but there are a lot of good teams in their conference. Calgary looks brutal this year with Keenan as coach. I think at best calgary slips into a playoff spot.
