PITTSBURGH -- Outfielder Ruben Mateo's contract was purchased Wednesday by the Pittsburgh Pirates from their Triple-A Nashville farm club and placed outfielder J.J. Davis on the 15-day disabled list.

Mateo, who has played previously in the majors with Texas and Cincinnati, joined the Pirates in time for their doubleheader against San Diego.

Mateo, 26, hit .316 with 11 home runs, 12 doubles and 25 RBIs in 35 games with Nashville.

Davis, who is out of minor league options, was 2-for-21 (.095) in 16 Pirates games.

The move means outfielder Raul Mondesi, currently with his family in the Dominican Republic, is unlikely to return to Pittsburgh this week. The Pirates held off putting Davis on the disabled list Monday as they waited to see if Mondesi would rejoin them.

Mondesi left the Pirates on May 7, citing worries about his family as he contests a lawsuit by former major leaguer Mario Guerrero seeking part of his career earnings.

Mondesi later told The Associated Press he would not play again this season, but apparently reconsidered his decision over the weekend.
