St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter's career is in jeopardy as he continues to battle a nerve injury that cost him most of last season.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny announced Tuesday that the 2005 Cy Young Award winner almost certainly won't pitch in 2013 and that his career is most likely over.

St. Louis is currently listed at 14/1 in the LVH's World Series futures and 7/1 to win the NL pennant.

The 37-year-old righty has a career 144-94 record with a 3.76 ERA and is best known for his outstanding performances in the playoffs.

Kyle Lohse, who was 16-3 with a 2.86 in 211 innings for St. Louis last season remains unsigned as a free agent. Mozeliak did not speculate Tuesday if the club will make an attempt to re-sign the starter in Carpenter's stead.
