Lakers' TV show pitch makes them favorites to sign Howard

If you’re a Los Angeles Lakers fan itching to tune into the “Dwight Howard Show” each week, you might want to put some money down on the Lakers’ odds of retaining the All-Star free-agent center this offseason.

According to reports out of L.A., the Lakers have not only offered Howard a five-year $118 million deal but also his own TV show. Time Warner Cable partnered with the NBA franchise in 2012 in a deal that could be worth as much as $5 billion over 25 years. Time Warner reportedly had delegates at the Lakers’ meeting with Howard Tuesday.

Los Angeles is currently a -200 favorite to resign Howard at online sportsbook The Houston Rockets (+165) - who are reportedly also offering Howard a TV show through CSN Houston - and the Dallas Mavericks (+250) are the other two front runners to acquire the three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. According to's Zach Harper's NBA free agent power rankings, Los Angeles is the No.1 favorite to sign Howard.

According to Michael Stewart, an oddsmaker with, Houston's NBA title futures have come down from +2,500 to +1,500 with rumors that Howard is leaning toward the Rockets, and would move to +1,200 if he does actually sign with the team.

Dallas has had its futures shaded to +4,000 and will shoot up to +5,000 or higher if Howard decides to pass on the Mavs. The Lakers are currently +5,000 to win the NBA championship, with Howard's status up in the air and Kobe Bryant recovering from an Achilles injury.

"I can't remember a time when they were listed at 50-1 before the season started but that's where we have them listed," Stewart says about Los Angeles.
