Sharp action moves Bears-Lions spread up to key number

The love for the Detroit Lions is unrelenting among NFL bettors. The other undefeated team from the NFC North opened as 6-point home favorites against the defending division champion Chicago Bears but most shops have moved the number up to a touchdown spread.

“There’s definitely some sharp play on Detroit, I can tell you that,” Cantor Gaming race and sportsbook director Mike Colbert told Covers.com Monday afternoon.

The spread held steady at 6 for most of the week and Cantor Gaming, which runs the sportsbooks at Cosmo, the M Resort, Hard Rock and Tropicana, actually dropped the spread to 5.5 for a short period Sunday afternoon.

“Most of the action was on the Bears throughout the week,” Colbert said. “We took a significant bet on Chicago yesterday and moved the line down. But we opened at 6 again on Monday morning and are at 7 now.”

Colbert isn’t the only sportsbook director moving the Monday Night Football line. Jay Rood, the head oddsmaker at the MGM/Mirage, told Covers.com he was at 6.5 but planning to move to 7 very soon.

“I think it’s more of a play against the Bears than one for the Lions,” Colbert said. “I agree with it. Chicago’s offensive line is a mess. First game in Detroit on Monday night in a long time. The crowd’s going to be going nuts.”
