Notre Dame starting quarterback Everett Golson has been suspended for the fall term at the university and won’t suit up for the Fighting Irish this season.

"Everett is not enrolled at the university. Federal law and our own polices preclude us from discussing specifics," spokesman Dennis Brown said in an email to ESPN.

Many media outlets are speculating that Golson’s departure is academic-related.

The shocking news has done some serious damage to Notre Dame’s futures odds, pushing the Irish from 25/1 to 40/1 at Sportsbook.com to win the BCS title.

Senior Tommy Rees is the most experienced quarterback enrolled, with 18 career starts and will likely assume the first-string role.

Golson completed 187-of-318 passes for 2,405 yards and 12 touchdowns with six interceptions last season. He also ran for 298 yards and six scores.
